Overview

Robert Shaw's Songs of Angels: Christmas Hymn is an easy listening collection of classic carols and hymns. There are no contemporary songs -- it is supposed to capture the spirit of an olde-tyme Christmas. Since Shaw's arrangements are a little syrupy and mainstream, it doesn't quite reach its goal, but it's nevertheless a fairly entertaining listen that would work nicely as holiday background music.

I wanted to hear traditional Christmas carols and hymns in beautiful vocal arrangements, and that's exactly what I got with this wonderful CD. I don't find the arrangements syrupy or mainstream at all. They sound like what you might hear at church, and they sound exactly as you would expect them to sound. No weird or jazzed up versions, no alternate melodies. Just good, traditional Christmas music. And when you want to recapture that non-commercial, warm feeling of Christmas past, listen to this CD. It'll take you there immediately.

This is by far the best Christmas CD ever made. I listen to it for hours and hours. Robert Shaw's choral methods are amazing and the voices on this recording are incredible. There are at least 5 copies of this between my family and close friends. An excellent gift for music teachers, choir directors, and the singer in your family. You cannot resist singing along.
