Editorial Reviews

Criticas
Adults-This book, although aimed at educators, has much to offer children in classroom settings. Its approach to the subject matter is scholarly and earnest and its compilation of 12 traditional songs includes representation from the Caribbean and Central and South America. The producers have chosen to present two versions of each song. The first half of the CD offers classroom recordings in a studio setting, featuring well-rehearsed children's voices and professional musicians. More interesting by far are the field recordings of the same songs presented in the second half. These were made during a conference of music educators held in Venezuela. Although there are imperfect moments in these performances, the resulting music is very textured and authentic. The accompanying English-language book offers a chapter for each country represented and is decorated with small b&w drawings. Historical and cultural information as well as notes on the musical tradition of the region are presented along with the musical notation. The lyrics appear in both English and Spanish. Teachers will prize the instructional and orchestration suggestions for each song. For school libraries as well as academic collections. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
