Overview

Japanese national Kaneda studied classical music and sang jazz in her home country before arriving in Los Angeles in 1995. Her training and experience is evident on this recording, which is produced by Crusader Stix Hooper, and features the arrangements and, especially, the excellent piano playing of Eugene Maslov along with swinging drummer Ndugu Leon Chanceler. Kaneda has a pleasant, flexible, pliant voice and she sings in a sweet, unaffected manner, very cool. Pop sensibilities creep in, as you might expect from the support crew. An occasional synth wash or guitar scream is added for accent. But the program, a stack of most recognizable standards, stands on it's own timeless pedestal. Best cuts; "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," displaying Kaneda's scatability, the pristine singing and creative arrangement of "Blue Moon" and the Japanese folk influence on the intro to "I Loves You Porgy," as well as the familiar closer, the old AM hit of the '60s, "Ue Wo Muite Arukou-Tears Behind the Stars/Sukiyaki," done funky with English translation. Combining the cute and romantic, Kaneda is clearly just getting her feet wet. This CD is surprisingly a mainstream jazz effort considering her inspiration, Gilli Smyth and Daevid Allen from the psycho-trophic rock band Gong. There's some attempt to break from the norm, which should flower on following efforts.
