Overview

This collection from Sounds True audio celebrates the bodhisattva Tara, a deity in Tibetan, Japanese, and Chinese Buddhism associated with providing compassion, aiding in liberation from fear and suffering in cyclic existence, and personal protection. Songs of Tara: Devotional Music to the Goddess of Liberation matches actual Buddhist prayers and chants from Jetsun Ani Rinpoche, Her Eminence Jamyang Sakya, and the Gyuoto Monks Tantric Choir chanting her mantra and prayers, as well as various devotional singers such as Nawang Khechog, Maneesh de Moor and Sudha, and Darpan & Bhakta using Tara's signature mantra in new compositions. His Holiness XIV Dalai Lama actually chants the longer mantra for Green Tara -- an emanation of the deity who represents enlightened activity -- with an atmospheric backdrop employed behind him. Ultimately, even if one is not a Buddhist who practices from the Tibetan tradition, but instead simply prefers meditation music and chanting, this lovely hour-long set will hold appeal.
