Songs Without Words II: A Windham Hill Piano Collection

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Who needs lyrics when you've got 88 keys? On Songs Without Words II, pianists Jim Brickman, Michael Feinstein, David Benoit, Janis Ian and many others let their melodic skills do the talking. Consider this expressive collection of mood-setting solos the soundtrack to your imagination. On this, the follow-up to Songs Without Words, return contributors Jim Brickman and David Benoit join together on the opening track, "Glory." But it's solo all the way on the rest of this album in celebration of the piano's lyric power. No vocalists needed.

All Music Guide - Zac Johnson
New age label Windham Hill offers up 11 melodic contemporary instrumentals on Songs Without Words, Vol. 2, the follow-up to their successful earlier volume. These solo piano pieces from performers Janis Ian, David Benoit, Jim Brickman, Michael Feinstein, and others are exactly what the title suggests; not just instrumentals but songs where the melody line is clear and strong enough to suggest a single voice being accompanied by a piano with no lyrics necessary. Surprisingly, Windham Hill's flagship pianist, George Winston, doesn't make an appearance here, but his rich and textured style wouldn't have fit into these parameters anyway. Instead, the performers deliver gentle pop songs on piano without any troubling intrusions from orchestration or even words.
New Age Voice
Instrumentals so emotionally deep that lyrics are superfluous.
