Sonia's Smile: Life of a Teenage Peace Activist: Combining Compassion with Global Reach
This is a biography of Sonia Bawa's life. Her entire life, right from the time that she was a toddler, through her preteen years and right up to her teenage years, Sonia demonstrated compassion and empathy towards humans as well as animals. She never let her cancer define who she was. Sonia was courageous, confident and content. When the World Trade Center was devastated on 9/11, Sonia, a young girl, collected money for the victims and their families. When informed by the Red Cross that they had sufficient funds and could not accept her collection, Sonia put together a school chest with supplies for the innocent girls in Afghanistan who had lost their belongings as collateral damage in President Bush's War On Terror.

Even though over 20 years have passed since Sonia's passing, her message of peace still holds relevance. Several nations are still at war all across the globe!

Sonia's all-encompassing empathy and concern with global issues bespoke a mature soul. The above are just a few examples of Sonia's philanthropic activities.

In this poignant telling of Sonia's life, (including prose, poetry and images), her father Rajan Bawa recounts the challenges faced by Sonia nd her family in dealing with a terrible illness whose treatment remains suboptimal. Sonia recognized this and wrote to President Bush to divert some of the funds being spent on his War on Terror to be used to fund cancer research. To amplify her message, Sonia started a website from her hospital bed and solicited handwritten letters from all around the world to join her request to President Bush.

As her father often says, "I can die and be born a 1000 times and still not have a fraction of compassion that was an integral part of Sonia's character!"

Despite her suffering, Sonia remained upbeat and positive and an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

I hope that you, the reader, will join in this journey of exploration of Sonia's life and be inspired as well.
