Overview

This CD combines a complete session that Sonny Stitt (doubling on alto and tenor) did with the 1959 Oscar Peterson Trio (which includes the pianist/leader, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Ed Thigpen) and three titles from 1957 with Peterson, Brown, guitarist Herb Ellis, and drummer Stan Levey. The music very much has the feel of a jam session and, other than a themeless blues, all of the songs are veteran standards. Highlights of this fine effort include "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "The Gypsy," "Scrapple from the Apple," "Easy Does It," and "I Remember You." Lots of cooking music.

It appears that the professional reviewer (see Editorial Review tab) has, at least partially, confused this album with some other one. Herb Ellis (guitar) is not on this album. The reviewer says that "I Remember You" in on this ablum, but it isn't. There is the tune "I'll Remember April". Perhaps that is what he is referring to. The track listing that Barnes and Noble lists here is accurate. The professional reviewer is right about one thing: this is an excellent collection of tunes in a straight-ahead jazz style. Sonny Stitt plays on all tracks with the Oscar Peterson Trio. The original liner notes by Stephen Frostberg are included inside the CD's cardboard jewel case. These liner notes give the background info about how these tunes came to be recorded in Paris in 1959.
