Overview

Chris Massi has been running from his world his entire life. The son of a Mafia assassin and the former son-in-law of a mob kingpin, Massi has tried to stay on the right side of the law, building a prestigious career as an attorney, and insulating his children as much as possible. But now a series of tragedies have left him without a law license and without several of his loved ones. And at the same time, his teenaged son is beginning to gravitate toward the gangster world Chris has tried so hard to protect him from.

Michele Mathias has been running away from her life for more than a decade. Once a promising young woman with a future, she’s now a drug addicted street player living with the knowledge that her daughter – the only bright thing in her life – was taken away from her. When her roommate is murdered in a mob-related hit, her life intersects with Chris’s life – and their worlds change forever.

For Chris, a showdown is coming. The only way for him to save his son and regain his future is to face – and maybe even embrace – the demon he’s always avoided. For Michele, her last chance at redemption has arrived. How their journeys collide with the dark New York underworld is the stuff of the kind of suspenseful, passionate drama we’ve come to expect from James LePore.

I love a good crime story, and I was not disappointed by LePore's newest novel, Sons and Princes, which hits bookstores today. You know the story is going to be good when it opens with a dismembered body of a hit man. LePore is a wonderful storyteller, captivating the reader through his prose. Just enough background information is given to entice the reader as the plot thickens, making it an impossible novel to put down. I really enjoyed the different sections of the novel, zoning in on particular characters to help solidify and explain their actions throughout the story. As the crimes unfold and the main character, Chris Massi, deals with his internal and external struggles, he must find balance between the Mafia's world and his own life. In reality, the synopsis of the novel doesn't do it justice as it's about so much more: A priest trying to make amends. A father trying to save his only son. A son trying to avenge his father. A Mafia don looking to secure his family name with a successor. A junkie attempting to make things right. A prosecutor with a vendetta. A mother trying to protect what is hers. LePore paints a very intricately woven story as he connects all the characters through the past and present. As the twists and turns develop and the story begins to solidify, you will be shocked by the choices and actions that take place within the novel. A twenty-five year veteran of the law, LePore has vast knowledge that he brings to his book as it analyzes the underground Mafia life in this gripping tale. I truly hope there will be a sequel to the novel, and I am excited to read LePore's other novels, Blood of My Brother, and A World I Never Made. Four stars!

Lepore has a way of introducing characters, yes, with flaws, yet trying to work their way out of ethical dilemmas. His characters have substance, you experience their struggles, and celebrate their answers. Yet, they are so unpredictable. . . lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing till the very end. I am becoming a big fan of his stories, The World I Never Made and Gods and Fathers. . . all superb and each one quite different from the other. Thank you, James Lepore for some great reads.

Chris Massi is in a bad patch. He has spent his life trying to avoid his father's world. His father was a stone cold Mafia assassin; the local Don's hitman. Chris tried to go the other way. He grew up, married, had children and had a promising career as a U.S. Attorney. But, forces from the past keep haunting him. The marriage didn't last, and Chris has been on his own. He is worried about his teenage son, who seems to glory in the family's Mafia connections. Chris's ex-wife is the daughter of the current Don, and this Don is looking for an heir to take over the operation. His brother is a junkie, who scams and cons his way through life, skirting on the edges of the Family. Chris has just been disbarred. An old friend turned enemy has vowed to bring Chris down. This man, Dolan, is a federal prosecutor. He was Chris' best friend growing up until Joe Black Massi, Chris's father, gunned down Dolan's father. He charged Chris on trumped up charges of stock fraud and when Chris was acquitted, managed to push through ethical charges against him that got him disbarred. As bad as things are, they are about to get worse. Chris gets caught up in a Mafia power struggle and his life is in danger from the men he knew all his life. In addition, Dolan has decided that he will take out Chris; either legally through a trumped-up murder charge or by physically killing him. Can Chris make his way through this maze of intrigue, betrayal and violence? This book is recommended for readers who like noir crime stories. It portrays the world of the Mafia, and the street life that surrounds the family's operations. The conflict that sons feel toward strong fathers, loving and hating them simultaneously is explored. There is plenty of action. Fans of Mafia stories will not be disappointed; this one delivers.

Chris Massi is the son of a father who was absent and far from a true role model to Chris, at least that's what Chris thinks. But involvement in the Mafia and the acts that flow from there have ramifications that spread wide and far, beyond in fact one's very limited imagination. After making a life for himself in the so-called normal world as a lawyer on the side of justice, Chris finds that his father was responsible for the death of a friend's father, that man, now a dire enemy, who has spent his whole life trying to destroy Joe Black Massi's family. Now, Chris is disbarred from practicing law, divorced, and watching one son acting like a wanna-be Mafia man and the other one drugging and womanizing himself to death. Not a happy family scenario for sure! Readers now enter the completely sordid world wherein secrets are revealed of who killed whom, of who was responsible for destroying Chris's career, and of the origins of a loss that completely spins Chris Massi's life in a different direction that will leave the reader flipping pages to find out what happens next. The plot thickens with the introduction of a drug addict, Michele Mathias, who has lost her daughter to her addiction but who has a glimmer of hope that rises strongly when she meets Chris Massi. Ironically, it turns out that the bosses behind the drugs, porn, etc. have more to do with the Mafia Chris knows so well. Who can be trusted? Is Chris being tested for a new crime career as he is offered the opportunity for revenge? What is it about Joe Black Massi, the father, and Joseph, Chris's brother, that Chris discovers and wishes he knew long before this cycle of confusion turns into a vortex of death and disaster leading only to prison or the grave? To say more would spoil the suspense flying through so many pages of this crime drama that, given more public exposure, is sure to become a best seller. James LePore, as in previous books, knows his subject well, including the gray rather than black and white world of the Mafia. Trust is the issue of honor that is the essence of Sons and Princes, a trust the redeems when one realizes that things are not what they truly appear to be! Thrilling read for all crime and mystery lovers!
