Newcomer Dave Horowitz brings electrifying rhythmic energy to a cast of musically inclined primates and proves in his inimitable way that patience is a virtue.

As the triangle player in the primate percussion band, Baboon has trouble waiting patiently for his turn.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The orchestra is warming up for "Percussion of the Apes" as baboon peers out at the audience. Monkeys beat the drums, chimpanzees thunder away at the timpani, gorilla has got a gong, and baboon just cannot wait for his turn. As player after player encourages him to just "hold on," baboon's patience wears thin. And then suddenly . . . all eyes are on baboon! He rings his triangle and brings down the house! Comic illustrations and a text that be-bops along with the story heighten baboon's anticipation and the rhythm of the song as it builds and builds. Creative rhymes will bring out the giggles as primates of every size join in the chorus. Either as a comical introduction to the variety of primates, or as a move-along read-aloud, this picture book will be loved in any preschooler's home. 2005, GP Putnam's Sons/Penguin Young Readers Group, Ages 3 to 5.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-The primates have all come together to put on a drum show, "Percussion of the Apes." Baboon's triangle may not have the same presence as some of the other instruments ("Chimpanzees play timpani," while "Gorilla's got a gong"), yet youngsters learn that in a band, size and volume aren't as important as timing and cooperation. Reading this work aloud is the next best thing to hearing a live concert. The terse text carries a drumlike beat, and its size, color, and placement on the page help to convey that pounding rhythm. The artfully arranged illustrations-a vivid combination of cut paper, charcoal, and colored pencils-make this book a striking package, and readers will fall for Horowitz's adorable characters. Rich purple endpapers set off white chalky sketches of the primates banging on the variety of drums found inside the book-everything from congas and bongos to "pots and pans" and "things from under the sink." A surefire storyhour success.-Julie Roach, Watertown Free Public Library, MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
