Overview

It is a time of giants, of larger-than-life men and women who stalk the spaceways, of ageless killers like The Forever Kid and alien bounty hunters like Three-Fisted Ollie.

And the most powerful giant of them all is a little 8-year-old girl. Governments want her. So do criminal kingpins. And armies. And almost everyone else.

For Penelope Bailey has a power, a talent, never before encountered in the history of the human race: she can not only see the future, but by her actions she can manipulate and alter it..

The Mouse, a female thief who rescues her, thinks that makes her the savior of humanity. The Iceman thinks it makes her the most dangerous person in the galaxy. The alien Mock Turtle thinks it makes her an object of worship. The Yankee Clipper thinks she can make his pirate fleet invulnerable in battle.

They might all be right - or they might all be wrong. Only time, and a little girl with a big power, can tell…

Editorial Reviews

Analog
Need I add that the tale bears Resnick's writerly stamp? If you don't feel you've had your money's worth out of it, it will only be because you finished it that quickly. It's that smoothly, eminently readable.
Science Fiction Chronicle
This is one of those rare novels that pulls you in so quickly and effectively that you'll end up reading it in a single sitting.
Amazing
Resnick is one of the top storytellers in the field, and SOOTHSAYER is a wonderfully written, lyrical tale, and I honestly can't think of anything negative to say about it.
Library Journal
A girl with the power to foresee the future sparks an interplanetary hunt in this trilogy opener set in the same world as Santiago (Tor Bks., 1986).

This is the first book of the Oracle trilogy. It's about a woman named Mouse (which is not her true name) stumbled a girl called Penelope Bailey, who had extra-ordinary ability to see different outcomes of the future and acted upon the "best" outcome. As a well known trope, they need ed to evaded plenty of bounty hunters and experienced plenty of adventures. This is an easy read, similar to a Hollywood blockbuster, with lots of action sequences, cross-and-double cross, and peculiar death(death by slipping). The universe is both bizarre and beautiful. The action is complete and wonderful. Mike Resnick is a gifted writer who can write so real that we read as if we are experiencing the events through the characters' eyes. This serves as a good intro for the trilogy. However, I think the characters are somehow flat. Mouse, Merlin, Iceman. Yankee Clipper, etc. They are wonderful people. But there are not enough screen time for them to shine. Mouse was just like a nanny after "rescuing" Penelope. Her reason and motivation for rescuing Penelope was not shown clearly. That makes her "betrayal" of Penelope and her death by Penelope seem abrupt. The ending rushes, too. I don't think the resolution is good though the Mexican standoff seems awesome but unbelievable. Anyway the story requires build-up in the first book and I'm looking forward to the second the third books.

Rescuing a little girl in trouble sets the thief, Mouse's, life on wild ride. Penelope is a seer, able to see all possible outcomes resulting from the choices that lie a few seconds ahead of her. This makes her valuable, dangerous and in danger. Leaving behind her mentor, Merlin, Mouse takes the girl on an intergalactic quest for safety from the bounty hunters who want her dead or imprisoned. With the help of the Forever Kid, an Immortal who seeks to either die or see others to their deaths, the young woman and child stay one step ahead of danger, until a desperate gamble takes a bad turn that forces Mouse to make a choice she never anticipated. ...............*** With surprising twists, Mr. Resnick presents his readers with a true moral dilema that will make them think. More in depth characterization would have made this a more fascinating novel; nonetheless, it is thought provoking and disturbing. ***

This is the first ever e-book I have bought and I intend to now buy every e-book Mike Resnick has written. I am not a fan of sci-fi but found myself somehow drawn to this book. A warning; you will not be able to stop reading this novel. Soothsayer is incredibly fast paced, wonderfully original, intelligently written, and extremely easy to read. The story and characters are the result of a true craftsman. Buy this book!

I admit to being a big Resnick fan, but this trilogy, I believe, represents works by an author at the height of his powers. When you finish, you will not believe the story arc when you look back. Resnick's writing style is very unique and entertaining. I read these on my PocketPC on long train rides. Perfect!
