Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bergen (who has contributed to the Candy Apple series) launches a series about a tenacious third grader, Sophie, who settles on a nickname that she thinks describes her perfectly. Yet she quickly realizes that others aren’t likely to call her Sophie the Awesome, “unless she had proof of her awesomeness to back it up.” As might be expected, Sophie’s attempts at impressing her teachers and classmates don’t go well. She is chastised for making a racket on the cymbals when she tries to stand out in music class, lands on her bottom—and in the nurse’s office—after attempting to jump down six steps at once, and is reprimanded by the principal for trying to stuff a record number of fries in her mouth at lunch. Sophie’s run-ins with her nemeses—the rambunctious class cutup and an uppity know-it-all—provide snatches of humor, and she finally earns a nickname (if not the one she had envisioned) in an unexpected, action-filled ending. Tallardy’s (The Girl’s Body Book) cartoony illustrations help play up the relatable emotions at work in this straightforward tale. Ages 7-10. (May)
Children's Literature - Jennifer Lehmann
Sophie is tired of being average. She is not the oldest in her family, but she is not the youngest, either. She is not the tallest in her class, not the smartest, the funniest, or even the only Sophie. She wants to be special, though! All of her favorite characters have a "the" name, so Sophie decides that she will become "Sophie the Awesome." For the rest of the school day, she tries to live up to her new awesome name, but it only seems to get her into trouble. Will she ever be anything but boring Sophie M.? Sophie and her struggles are anything but boring. The entire story takes place in the space of one school day, which elevates all the details of third grade life to an importance that will resonate with readers. Sophie is energetic and fun, not one of the "good" kids, but she is also not part of the "bad" crowd. Her feelings of being average will be familiar to many children wanting to feel special. The adults are somewhat one-dimensional, as are a few of Sophie's classmates. Sophie's closest companions, though, including the annoying Toby Myers, are well-developed. Perhaps Mindy, who earns the title, "the Meanest," will be further developed in subsequent books in the "Sophie the..." series. Reviewer: Jennifer Lehmann
School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—Third-grader Sophie Miller decides that she is too boring and needs another name, like Nate the Great or Ramona the Brave, so she becomes Sophie the Awesome. The only problem is that no one realizes that she is so amazing. She tries to be awesome in music class by playing her instrument too loudly. Then she tries by jumping on the stairs, which is against the rules, and she ends up in the nurse's office. Other attempts such as stuffing her mouth with French fries and jumping rope fail to show her "awesomeness" as well. Only when Sophie prevents a kindergartner from running into a busy street does she change her name to one she deserves: Sophie the Hero. This is an early chapter book. However, in some of the cartoon drawings, the children look like middle schoolers. Sophie is a self-centered protagonist whose friends are there to serve her needs, but she does not reciprocate. Although she redeems herself in the end, readers may not get that far.—Elaine Lesh Morgan, formerly at Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR

    Funny series

Have you ever had a boring life of events? Talk to Sophie! She knows what it feels like! Until....
Sophie gets an idea of how to make her life more exciting!
I think this is a good book for kids because it shows how hard Sophie perseveres to achieve her new goal. Sophie the Awesome is a short series that is easy for kids to read. So read to find out what happens in Sophie the Awesome. Then you can read the other hilarious books in the Sophie series!

    a fun book for girls

This is a cute and funny account that takes place during one school day in the life of Sophie Miller, a third grader who decides she will be Sophie the Awesome. She sets out to prove she is awesome and goes through several mishaps until something happens at the end of her school day that not only proves it but also gives Sophie the idea for a new name!

Initially, my 9 year-old daughter thought this book wouldn't be interesting, but after reading it together she said it was funny, with Sophie reminding her of a third-grade version of Junie B. Jones, a rambunctious character in a series she loved when younger.

This is a fun, easy-to-read book. In a light-hearted way, it deals with school life, friendships, and trying to stand out. Comic-like and age-appropriate illustrations are interspersed throughout the story. The first in a series, this book is ideal for the fun-loving extrovert girl in your family who may also be a reluctant reader.

Awesome book for helping girls learn to be themselves

My 7-year-old daughter and I enjoyed this as a read-aloud book. The characters - especially Sophie, best friend Kate, and rival Mindy - sounded like kids you hear in the early elementary classroom and playground. I appreciated that even though the characters spoke like typical kids, their language was not inappropriate for my young daughter. I also thought the ending gave a nice segue into the next book. My daughter agreed by saying, "Well, she fixed this problem, but it looks like there's another one coming!"
