School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2 Sophie's parents have decided that she ought to see more of the sky than can be glimpsed from their high-rise city apartment, so the family goes on a camping trip to Purple Cloud Rock. Sophie is enchanted with her new knapsack and sleeping bag, as well as with the animals and flowers that she sees about her. After the second day's hike, they victoriously reach the top of Purple Cloud Rock and proudly pose for a photo before making camp for the night. The next day, they begin the trek back home, with the scent of pine cones as a reminder of their trip. Quietly told in short sentences, Sophie's adventures are depicted in soft, lush watercolors, with a remarkable play of light and shadow. The simplicity of the text comes close to evocative poetry at times. This can be useful in preparing a young child for an outdoor adventure. It is fine for preschoolers and appropriate for early readers as well. Kathleen Brachmann, Highland Park Public Library, Ill.
