Overview

Fellow space travelers Michael Stearns and Ron Sunsinger have once again teamed up for a transformative trip through the mystical realm. Their first joint albums, Singing Stones and Kiva, touched a spiritual tone, but the good medicine of Sorcerer enters previously unknown heights. Inspired by the writings of Carlos Castaneda and the teachings of the mystic Don Juan, Stearns and Sunsinger summon the feeling of a journey down the warrior's path, and let's just say it's not exactly lined with rose petals and angelic choirs. Stearns pulls from his vast library of sampled sounds to conjure up a wash of raven calls, ghostly voices, cosmic chainsaws, whipping winds, jaguar snarls, and towering gongs to cut through the world of illusion and pull you on toward the great unknown. There are several moments of blissful release, too: sounds of sparkling starlight, the patter of cleansing rain, a Peruvian shaman singing a beautiful Ayahuasca song. Just take heed that the experience of such a masterfully produced sonic trip requires time to listen fully...and then recover!

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Diana Potts
After being silent for six years, Michael Stearns returned with the full-length experimental ambient album Sorcerer in September of 2000. The album was inspired by spiritual writing from Carlos Castaneda, resulting in a dark, abstract world created by Stearns and Ron Sunsinger using environmental sounds, bowed metal, and acoustic instruments. The result: Sorcerer is a highly abstract piecing together of noises, absent of beats or melodies.
