Overview

July 17, 1977, Santa Monica, California

Twenty-one-year-old college student, Paul Townsend is living an idyllic life on the sun drenched sands that meet the blue Pacific, his biggest concern being an increasingly complex love life. There's Renee Ayers, a seventeen-year-old beauty that he works with and can't seem to resist. Then there's Lori Lewis, the first real love of his life, reappearing after three years. Finally, Jennifer Ryan, the famous actress, may be trying to seduce him.

But Paul's life is about to be turned upside down. One hot summer day, a large man in a suit and tie walks toward the volleyball courts of Sorrento Beach. He demands a private meeting with Jack Rosen, the closest thing to a father Paul has ever known. Jack leaves with the stranger and does not return.

Days pass and Jack is still missing. When the police fail to turn up a lead, it's left to Paul to track him down, unwittingly thrusting him into a high stakes game of international intrigue.

Can Paul discover Jack's great secret that will explain his disappearance? And is there a murderer in their midst? The angry paparazzo? The unbalanced neighbor? The jilted ex-lover?

Will Paul be able to unravel the mystery ... before it's too late for Jack?

What People are Saying About This

Tom Jasek
I couldn't stop reading this book. David Grote captures a special time and place in Sorrento Beach, back when all you looked forward to as a college student was the next serve of the volleyball on the hot sand. Crashing into this idyllic life is the sudden disappearance of a fellow player. Grote deftly weaves a tale of mystery and intrigue with a coming-of-age story. Amazing effort in his debut novel.
--Tom Jasek, Tex's Sporting Goods employee, circa 1977.
George Rudnicki
David Grote captures the fun and excitement of the golden era of beach volleyball in an action-packed mystery. The mixture of intrigue, comedy, beach bums, volleyball professionals, beautiful women and snappy dialogue results in a page turner that you can't put down … get it and read it.
--George Rudnicki, Apartment 239'er from start to finish.
Steve Baer
Plot twists galore, unforgettable characters, suspense, and humor. This story has it all. And it all comes together in the summer of 1977 at Southern California's volleyball paradise, Sorrento Beach.
A great summer read for anyone who has ever dreamed of living in the world of the suntanned gods and goddesses of beach volleyball. Don't miss this one!
--Steve Baer, Sorrento Beach regular

Meet the Author

This is David Grote's first venture into novel writing, unless you count Hard Luck Pitcher, the one he wrote as a year-long sixth grade assignment. In the late seventies, Dave lived, worked, and played in the settings of Sorrento Beach, so he knows of which he writes.

Currently, Dave resides in Manhattan Beach, California, where he and his wife, Sherie, have raised three children.

A good fast pace read. I enjoyed reading a mystery that did not rely on having a lot of sex, gore, and cursing. It was a refreshing change to read.

But a bit of a let down. I thought there would be more of a surprise as to how the underdog would go about retribution.

Good, clean, involved book. Writing is rather rudimentary but kept my interest. Needs work on developing more "exciting," believable action. Was rather flat in the telling of such parts. Good for a first novel.

This book was great! It's a story of life on the beach in the 1970's with a good mystery thrown in. I hung out at Sorrento Beach during my high school years so the book was extra special to me. It is a well written page turner. For free how can you go wrong?

I am still reading this and it gets better as I go along. A little slow starting and I wasn't sure it would be any good - but I would encourage anyone to keep reading and I believe it will be a good book. Not the best - but an easy read.

You have to fead nearly 2/3 of the book before there much real action, Most of the book deals with two college students life on the beach. The last 1/3 of the book is pretty good, Sex and bad langusge detract from the story.
