Overview

The ten sea creatures depicted in this book are characterized as 'SORTA' scary meaning that they look far scarier than they actually are to humans. They are more likely to be scared of us that we should be of them and are typically not harmful unless we disturb them or accidentally 'bump into' them. Having said that, the pain they inflict from their sting or bite can be severe and may require medical attention. Only rarely have encounters with creatures shown in the book resulted in life-threatening situations.

About the Author

Geoffrey Hurley, the author of the book, is a retired marine fisheries biologist and environmentalist.  The illustrations in the book are adapted from actual encounters the author has had with these sea creatures while working and holidaying off Atlantic Canada, southern United States and the Caribbean.  These encounters were the basis for stories that he has told many times over the years to his four children and more recently to his seven grandchildren.
