Overview

S.O.S.: Spirit of Survival is a one-of-a-kind story of the incredible fortitude that ordinary people can conjure in order to overcome even the most harrowing of disasters. Told from the point of view of each of the five members of one family, this book offers a unique and detailed look into the truth behind the headlines surrounding the Carnival Cruise Line's Costa Concordia cruise ship sinking off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Tuscany in January of 2012. Their astounding account of the tragic events before, during and, perhaps most shockingly, after the enormous cruise ship ran aground are sure to amaze readers. However, the true messages of this book are hope and profound inspiration, as this family's bond deepens and strengthens through their ultimate survival journey.

I was on the Costa Concordia and this book is an excellent account of what happened.

Excellent book! So interesting, and I learned a lot. I really felt like I experienced what members of this family went through on the Costa Concordia. The travel tips were good and also their analysis of the cruise line industry was an eye opener.

Excellent book about the Costa Concordia ship wreck. I have read other books about this disaste,r but this one is definitely a 5 star. With all the talk about cruise line safety these days, this book put things into perspective for me.

I had heard from friends this was a great book.  I was fascinated to read about survivors of the Costa Concordia a  modern day Titanic shipwreck.  This book was extremely well written, and was captivating to read.  I give it 5 stars.

This is a great book. I loved the family closeness, also the emotional roller coaster. Its horrible what this family had to go thru, and I hope there message gets out. This book is the truth, and people should know the truth. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Although it has been more than a century since the Titanic sank, we are still moved by the struggles of her passengers and crew. In S.O.S.: Spirit of Survival, the members of the Ananias family describe how they survived a modern-day equivalent: the shipwreck of the Costa Concordia. The story is told through short vignettes contributed by all five members of the family, the four who were aboard the ship and the one who was not. We accompany the family first through their happy preparations for a wedding and a cruise, and then through the struggle of four to escape the sinking ship while the fifth tries desperately to help from afar. Along the way, we see not only a shocking lack of training and professionalism from members of the crew, but also the strength and faith of this close-knit family and the warmth and caring of strangers they meet throughout their ordeal. The book is well-written and thought-provoking, and I recommend it highly.

I give this book my highest recommendation.

Great Book! I saw this family on the Dr. Phil Show a few days after the accident.  I am glad they wrote a book as not all the facts and details were presented in the one hour television show.  Reading the book, I felt like I was actually on the sinking ship.  I was shocked at what happened after they got off the ship and the way the passengers were treated.

Talk about no place to run and no place to hide! The neglect of passengers and incompetence is astounding! Too bad these bozos are not subject to American jurisprudence. The American jury system is all it would take for the cruise industry to get its act together. Well done Ananias's! Its about time someone spoke out about the unspoken risks of cruising on ships flagged outside the U.S.

I have always been fascinated by the Titanic and after reading this book, I can see so many similarities in the Costa Concordia Shipwreck. It is a must read for all of you Titanic fans and draw your own conclusions as to what has changed in a 100 years. You will be surprised!

The terrifying, but yet amazing story of a STRONG family. S.O.S. takes you through the lives of the Ananias family as they prepare for their "vacation" of a lifetime! This book gives vivid informations from each of the family members involved. Also, the experience of the daughter(Debbie) that was NOT on the cruise ship. True and terrifying events that took place on that chilling day are all explained from their individual point of views. I highly recommend this book to all book lovers and cruisers out there!!! This book will give you an understanding of how strong a family can be during tough times. We can ALL learn something from The Ananias family!!! God bless them and all those who are affected by this event.  Lole ¿

This is a hard-to-believe account, told by 5 family members, of surviving the horrific accident that happened in Italy almost 2 years ago. But more than that, there is insight into the improperly trained crew, how hard it was to get back to the US, the history of safety on cruise ships, what one should know if they do go on a cruise and also some really useful and you'd-never-think-of-that travel and safety prep tips. I love the cover, too!! This is a true story. Amazing!

SOS Spirit of Survival is a compelling book that is definitely a must read! I was completely engrossed in this true story of how one family struggled to stay alive after their cruise ship started sinking. I found their story to be as inspirational as it was horrifying. The authors also provide the reader with invaluable information that all passengers should be aware of before traveling.

SOS Spirit of Survival was a fantastic read!  I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to know what it was really like to be on  the Costa Concordia ship.  The five authors tell their story from individual perspectives, minute by minute.  I  just couldn't put the book down. The authors' dedication to putting cruise safety at the forefront is commendable.  The cruise industry needs to put their passengers' safety first!  I was glad to see the book was dedicated to those that died, survived, and those that have ever had an incident on a cruise ship. The recommendations in the book  for all travelers are very valuable and useful. By the way, the book cover is amazing because you can actually feel that you are tilting with the ship!!!

This book takes you on a journey that nobody should have to go on!  I found myself spellbound as I read the harrowing account of how this family desperately tried to find any crew member who could help them and then finally realizing that they were on their own...it was up to them to find a safe way off a ship that was on its side and as  far as they knew sinking!  It is a story of courage, determination, perseverance and most of all faith!

S.O.S. is a heartfelt-moving yet sadly true story of a Southern California family who set out for a vacation of a lifetime. Just as the trip commenced disaster struck. The five family members alternately tell their story in this compelling drama. A foolish party-loving "captain" neglects his responsibility and allows the cruise liner to drift to close to shore causing the boat to begin capsizing. The family realizes if they are going to survive the effort is up to them. The book is extremely well written taking the reader on the voyage with this page-turning passionate recollection of the Ananias' family's stages of the voyage, the attempt to escape from the ship, get to shore and try to return home. Unbelievably, their attempt to return home was as compelling as their attempt to get off the ship. Sadly, the cruise line cherished money more than the needs of their passengers. This book is a must read for anyone who loves to travel and anyone who cherished their family.
