Overview

Memphis label Ecko Records specializes in contemporary soul, R&B, and blues, and while little on this sampler will make you forget about the Stax or Chess labels, it at least shows that a vital underground R&B scene is still in place in what is becoming an increasingly hip-hop world. Among the stronger cuts here are Rick Lawson's confident and assured version of "Stand Up On It," the brassy "Bone Me Like You Own Me" by blues shouter Barbara Carr, and two tracks by Lee "Shot" Williams, "Somebody's After My Freak" and the bouncy, percolating "Juke Joint Slide."
