Overview

Where Vol. 10 focused on the smooth side of 1973, Soul Hits of the 70s: Didn't It Blow Your Mind, Vol. 11 has a little bit more grit and funk. That's not to say that smoothness has been overlooked -- that's certainly not the case with seductive crooners like Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby," Love Unlimited's "Walkin' in the Rain with the One I Love," the Dells' "Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation" and Bloodstone's "Natural High." Nevertheless, harder grooves dominate the album, from Billy Preston's pounding "Will It Go Round in Circles" to the laidback funk of the Pointer Sisters' "Yes We Can." And all these songs are classics: Fred Wesley & the J.B.s' vamping "Doing it to Death," Don Covay's impassioned "I Was Checkin' Out She Was Checkin' In," Gladys Knight's stylish "Midnight Train to Georgia," Eddie Kendricks' "Keep on Truckin', Pt. 1" and the sultry Memphis soul of Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand the Rain." It's the best disc in Didn't It Blow Your Mind since Vol. 9 and the last consistently great entry in the series.
