Overview

Soul Hits of the 70s: Didn't It Blow Your Mind, Vol. 8 nearly matches the highs of such previous volumes as three and nine, offering a set of 12 classic and underappreciated gems from 1972. It's one of the funkiest discs in the series, with the hot, burning funk of Joe Tex's "I Gotcha" and the Jimmy Castor Bunch's "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" sitting next to the more seductive funk of Isaac Hayes "Do Your Thing." But what makes the collection so compulsively listenable is that those cuts are balanced by terrific pop-soul (Honey Cone's "The Day I Found Myself," Bill Withers' "Lean On Me," the Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose's "Too Late to Turn Back Now" and "Don't Ever Be Lonely (A Poor Little Fool Like Me)"), smooth soul (Frederick Knight's "I've Been Lonely for So Long") and updated variations on gritty, gospel-inflected Southern soul (the Staple Singers' "I'll Take You There," Luther Ingram's "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right" and Joe Simon's "Power of Love"). The end result is yet another essential soul collection from one of the finest soul series ever assembled.
