Overview

Writing with profound psychological and spiritual insight, prize-winning author Gary Zukav has had a major impact on the consciousness of our entire generation. His number one national bestseller, THE SEAT OF THE SOUL, has been a life-changing experience for millions of Americans.

In SOUL STORIES, Gary Zukav shows how this new understanding of power -- authentic power -- transforms our lives in countless ways.

Here too, is the story of Zukav's own personal evolution. He writes openly and intimately about periods of his life when he felt jealousy, competitiveness, fear, anger, and about how his understanding of these emotions changed with his awakening consciousness and recognition of a Universe that is alive and compassionate.

SOUL STORIES is filled with marvelous, true stories that show how intuition, harmony, sharing, and forgiveness actually express themselves in people's lives. Best of all, the stories lead to practical advice on how you can discover your own soul stories and the truths they reveal about the deepest sources of your being.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Gary Zukav is a great advocate for the power of intuition, or multisensory perception, as he prefers to call it. It gives you a new perspective, he says: "Nothing seems accidental. Everything has a purpose, and that purpose is to help you grow spiritually." Each of the 52 true stories in Soul Stories, which read like little parables, illustrate the power of multisensory perception, clarity, and reverence for life to transform the ordinary. Readers who have discovered Zukav via Oprah or his bestseller The Seat of the Soul will certainly enjoy an advanced seminar with this book.
Library Journal
Zukav (The Seat of the Soul), a frequent guest on Oprah, here presents accounts of people who exercise their intuitive power. Their ability and willingness to do this marks them as being "multisensory" and seems to show them as higher beings in the scheme of evolution. This sounds vague, but then Zukav's concepts can seem somewhat abstract. Many of the stories themselves are really quite nice and greatly appeal to one's sentiments. The author has a certain enthusiasm in his narration, but the overall delivery is somewhat monotonous. Public libraries with a large Oprah following and/or those with active spirituality/alternative religion collections will want to consider this work.--Michael T. Multisensory Perception

It was a gray winter afternoon. The black, sleek car was traveling fifty miles an hour when it hit the ice. Like a graceful dancer, it began a slow, horizontal pirouette as it slid toward a steep embankment and then disappeared over it. Inside, a young woman screamed as the car rolled again and again like a ball careening downward and spinning at the same time. That woman was my sister.

One hundred miles away, an older woman with gray hair suddenly rose out of her chair.

"Something has happened to Gail!" she gasped.

The telephone rang forty minutes later.

"Your daughter has been in an accident. She is not hurt badly, but her car was destroyed."

How could this have happened? The woman who rose in alarm, my mother, could not see her daughter struggling for her life as the car crashed again and again against the frozen ground and, at last, into a barren tree. She could not smell the crushed bushes beneath the battered car, or the gasoline from the ruptured tank. She could not hear the bending of metal and the shattering of glass, feel the impact of the car as it tumbled, or taste the blood in her daughter's mouth.

She did not have to. She used multisensory perception. Multisensory perception is a direct link with information that the five senses cannot provide. It eliminates the distance between the one who knows and what she knows. It eliminates the time between them. My mother did not need to wait for the police to tell her that her daughter's life had been in danger. She knew it as clearly as if she had watched, heard, smelled, felt, and tasted the experience herself. She engaged another way of knowing.

The businessman waslate for his plane. He waited impatiently for his ticket, and then drove quickly into the huge airport garage. The first level was full. So was the second. Up and up he spiraled, one narrow ramp after the other, becoming more worried each moment. Level three was full, and so was level four. As he approached the ramp to the last level, desperate now, he suddenly stopped. A large sedan came speeding around the curve, going the wrong way. Neither would have seen the other before the crash.

How did he know that car was coming? He could not see it, hear it, or smell it. His ability to taste and touch could not help him. This is also an example of multisensory perception. Multi means more than one. Taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight are different ways of sensing, but they are all part of a single system. That system is designed to detect one thing %151; the world that appears to be outside of you. If you only have five senses to navigate, you are limited to this system.

When the brochure first came in the mail, the woman did not give it much attention. It was about a conference that was too far away, too expensive, and not about the things that were most interesting to her. The next day, she felt an impulse to read it again, and the next day, too. She could not put it out of her mind, nor the curious feeling that she should attend. Without knowing why, she registered and booked a flight. The first day there she met a man who was struggling with cancer. She had a passionate interest in the healing process. With her assistance, his cancer disappeared, and they coauthored a book on healing.

Where did her impulse come from? She had two systems to provide her with information. The first %151; her five senses %151; didn't give her information about what might happen at the conference. Another system did. That second system is multisensory perception.

My friend Jeffrey had come to a dead end. He wanted to study "deviant personalities" from a positive point of view %151; what makes some people more fulfilled and happy than others. His graduate program in criminology only studied them from a negative point of view %151; what makes some people more violent than others. One night he dreamed that he visited the house of two friends (whom he actually knew). They were not home, so he let himself in. On a table in the living room he found a magazine called Eye. It told him exactly what he needed to know.

The next morning, he hurried to tell his friends about this dream. They weren't home. He knew where they kept the key, so he let himself in, although he had never done that before. On a table in the living room he found a magazine called Focus, which included a schedule of programs on a national public television station. As he looked through it, he suddenly realized that he could study positive "deviant personalities" by interviewing them on television! He did just that. He called his program "Thinking Allowed."

Jeffrey's dream told him how to find what he needed. So did the woman's impulse to go to the conference. The businessman's hunch told him what he needed to avoid. These are examples of multisensory perception. Jeffrey, the woman, and the businessman listened to their multisensory perception. That is why Jeffrey has his television program, the woman is the coauthor of a book, and the businessman stayed out of the hospital.

Having multisensory perception and using it to help you are different things. This is important to realize because we are all becoming multisensory. If you understand that, you will be looking for ways to use this ability. Actually, this ability is not new. What is new is that everyone is now getting it.

In the past, we called this ability by another name...

    Deceptively Simple

'Soul Stories' is a collection of 52 short stories which author Gary Zukav requests readers to contemplate as slowly as we wish -- even as slowly as one story per week. Each tale takes the reader one step further on a journey of introspective self-actualization in which relationships with one's ego and spirit are explored a little bit at a time. The book is deceptively simple to read, yet contains great depth which is ideal fodder for meditation.

Understanding the Mysterious Workings of Spirit

SOUL STORIES are a collection of 52 short stories which author Gary Zukav requests readers to contemplate as slowly as we wish -- even as slowly as one story per week. Each tale takes the reader one step further on a journey of introspective self-actualization in which relationships with one's ego and spirit are explored a little bit at a time. The book is deceptively simple to read, yet contains great depth which is ideal fodder for meditation. Zukav's SOUL STORIES are memorable tales of love, loss, and renewal in which the mysterious ways that spirit acts in our lives become just a bit more clear. Zukav does not preach any particular religion as he advocates that we aspire to reach our highest spiritual potential. In addition to the dozens of emotionally moving stories, Zukav gives advice such as 'Spiritual partners look inside themselves -- and not at each other -- when they get angry, frightened, or sad.' I could feel my heart breaking open with love and inspiration as I read each of these stories. These stories touch the heart and soul, and give us much to contemplate long after we've finished the last page.

    Loved It!

Fantastic book! I read his other books and really enjoyed this book too. I have re-read some of the book two times already. People need to be willing to get the good out of what he says - and then it is there. People that are more interested in complicated theories should look elsewhere. For me though I felt these 'Soul Stories' evoked feelings and ideas that liberated me - and shed new light on diffucult topics...especially how to have better personal relationships in our changing world and changing roles of men and women... I have seen him on Oprah and he has some very good insights - - and I love that he has helped spread ideas about enlightenment and living beyond just survival - to the 'multi-dimensional' - to a much bigger audience. I also think he has some good guidance to offer about balancing in personal relationships between traditional values and ideals(The 'Old' Man/Woman) and personal and spiritual growth(The 'New' Man/Woman) and how relationships are changing to accomodate the 'Multi-Dimensional' - i.e. people who look 'inside' for their inner truth or what is important to them in their lives. If you like Gary Zukav another book you must read is by two of the most amazing people I have ever met: Ariel and Shya Kane! Their book is called 'Working On Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Transformation' and you must read it. They have mastered living in the NOW and how to balance Success with Happiness and Enlightenment. I have done some of their workshops and they are AMAZING. Changed my life forever! Their book shows a PRACTICAL Way to Transformation and to becoming 'multi-dimensional', ie. how to become Who You Really Are. Well worth reading over and over again!

The Path of the Soul's Progress Towards Its Purpose

This book is unusually effective in raising spiritual issues into normal awareness, and does so in a friendly and pleasant way. Each story builds nicely on the preceding one to tickle your memory about experiences that you have had or heard about, and to raise your awareness about the questions these experiences raise. You will undoubtedly gain new insights and new ideas for addressing these issues the next time you run into them. Everything is done very gently, so you can decide for yourself what you want to believe and pay attention to. The book is both extremely deep and considerate at the same time. The theme of each story is basically built around the concept of uncovering what is in your soul, and then helping your conscious self to come into alignment with your soul. There is a beautiful analogy in one of the last stories in the book about what it is like to go from being in the desert (where life is harsh, dangerous, and full of fear) into the land of milk and honey where everything is rich, comfortable, and relaxed. When we feel like we are in the desert, we are deserting our soul's purpose. When we feel like things are wonderful, we are at one with that purpose. Professional editors tell writers not create books like this. They say that readers need to have all of the dots connected. Well, although the book is not weighted down with lots of logical support for the theses that are developed here, I found that the stories were beautifully connected together -- far better than if they were all part of one story. All but a few of the stories resonated with me. I look forward to thinking more about the ones that did not, in order to discern their intended meaning. One of the best parts of the book dealt with relationships, and the ways that two people can come into and out of harmony with each other at the spiri

If only everyone would read this book!

I personally cannot believe how asleep I've been in life! I have walked around in a daze! I was reacting to situations in my life without even realizing it! Up until now I responded to everyone with my emotions instead of my heart and consciousness! I feel the biggest problem in this world is people going through life with their eyes closed. This book should be a mandated reading in high school to raise consciousness in people! I am now anxiety free! I overcame a drug addiction to Valiums and a compulsive disorder for entering contests (I was really hooked). Now my next tackle is sugar! I know I can do it now with my new attitude for life and compassion for those around me. Now, if someone says or does something negative to me in their yet unconscious state, I try to see through the remark or action, to their soul. I hold no more grudges and feel free because of it. What a beautiful world this place would be if everyone knew how to become authentically conscious to their world. Thanks Gary!!!!

    Warm and Engaging - A True Eye-Opener

This book really grabbed me and I could not put it down. Gary Zukav has a wonderfully warm and engaging way of introducing such topics as awareness, intuition, forgiveness, true partnership and spiritual growth. His real-life stories allowed me to see a piece of myself in each of his characters as he presents, one by one, the tools for self-discovery and continued personal growth. One little example he gave made a particular impression on me, maybe because it was so simple and seemingly insignificant: He was recounting how he was driving on the street, upset about a slow driver ahead of him. Then, pulling up closer, he realized that it was a good friend of his and his attitude changed immediately, because he knew and cared about this person and he was so much more to him than just a slow driver. How often do I judge or get angry without knowing, without compassion for the other person, and make his or her life and mine miserable by doing so? I had never quite looked at it from this particular perspective and new ways of being have opened up for me. Another eye-opener that I have very much enjoyed reading is the book by Ariel and Shya Kane 'Working on Yourself Doesn't Work'. What a fascinating book! The authors have the ability to put mind-blowing ideas into simple language and to communicate clearly, with tenderness and compassion. Personal experiences are interspersed with suggestions how to take a new, fresh look at life. Their idea of full self expression by living in the moment is truly fascinating and has allowed me to rid myself of all kinds of ballast that I used to carry around and considered an integral part of me. After having read the book, I wanted more and bought two of their tapes, 'Magical Relationships' and 'More Magical Relationships'. They were both wonderful and record real interactions with participants of courses they have leaded. I felt very touched by their gentleness, their humor and their ability to listen, and I felt very inspired by those tapes - inspired to look at my life and to make the most out of it by using the magical tool of awareness. I guess my next tape purchase will be 'Completing Your Karma' and I am looking forward to meeting Ariel and Shya Kane on yet another adventure into the moment.

This Is The Guidebook For Spiritual Evolution !

I highly recommend 'Soul Stories' along with Mr. Zukav's other two books. 'Soul Stories' being the first to read, as it is more a primer to 'The Seat Of The Soul'. Having read 'The Seat Of The Soul' years ago, I would have welcomed the availability of 'Soul Stories' prior to that. 'Soul Stories' is so clear and simply profound. It will reach alot of soul searchers easily and wet their appetites for the main course of 'The Seat Of The Soul'. Then if they are still hungry and fortunate enough to find a copy of Mr. Zukav's ' The Dancing Wu Li Masters', they will delight in desert! Yes, yes, yes read ' Soul Stories' even if you have already read Mr. Zukav's first two books and especially if you haven't read any. You'll find what you're searching for and more in Mr Zukav's writings. They'll touch your soul.

    Making truth simple

When I first opened this book I saw chapters that were only 3 to 5 pages long. How can he write about the Soul in just a few pages ? Then I began to read. Gary writes in such simple loving truth. I have read so many books on spirituality and not one of them offered what this written painting offers...the truth...with love and non judgement. Such an easy and loving read.

TO UNDERSTAND ONESELF IS TO UNDERSTAND THE UNIVERSE

It's been ten long years since Gary Zuhav published SEAT OF THE SOUL. Now, in his newest book, SOUL STORIES, Mr. Zuhav continues the journey of helping the reader to understand his place in the Universe. In SOUL STORIES, Mr. Zuhav shows the reader how to work towards 'authentic power', which is somewhat like the Zen state of 'satori'. When one achieves 'authentic power', they are able to make responsible choices based on clear intention, choices that enable the person to stay in harmony with others. Reaching this state of being is not easy. It takes a strong desire and a lot of patience with oneself. One must go at it a step at a time. When a human being is able to project this state of awareness, he becomes more humble, forgiving, trusting, and is able to receive and to show more love to others. This is the state humanity is working towards. It is what the future of mankind is striving for. It will clearly effect the future of relationships between men and women, and certainly in the state of marriage. It will not, however, guarantee the success of a marriage, but rather instill honesty and integrity into the relationship, enabling both to grow, and if necessary to leave the marriage. For mankind to survive the future, it is vital that changes take place in our way of thinking and of viewing reality. There is much more out there than our five senses are able to detect, but the time is coming when that will change. Mr. Zuhav clearly understands the Universe is filled with compassion and that it is up to humanity to begin to project this from the inside out. Through Mr. Zuhav's own experiences and those of others, SOUL STORIES will offer hope and guidance to those willing to take that first step toward self discovery. I thank Mr. Zuhav from my hear for his love of life and his love of humanity. I hope that it won't be as long before his next book comes out.
