Reflections of a modern Takuan Ho

For the most part modern martial arts appeals to the competitive spirit of Americans and our love of action. In Soul Sword: The Way and Mind of a Zen Warrior, Vernon Kitabu Turner reminds us that the roots of martial arts go deeper, so deep, in fact, they can be a means to spiritual growth. Like Takuan Ho, the Zen master who inspired the samurai warriors to peaks of martial excellence, Kitabu Turner helps us to find "the missing heart," of our practice, as he extolls the virtue of No-Mind. Soul Sword is more than rehashed theory. It is filled with anecdotes from the life of the author who lives what he writes. His live demonstrations around the country with experts and masters of a variety of styles earned him their edorsements. It is encouraging to the reader to know that book reflects what can still be accomplished in the modern world. Soul Sword is easy and enjoyable to read. I keep a copy with me and read it over and over again for inspiration. It is more than a martial arts book, its an uplifting tool for life. Vernon Kitabu Turner is a Zen Master whose spiritual roots are in Christianity. This, in, itself, is intriguing and proof that some experiences transcend creeds. You will want to give this book to your friends and loves ones. The world seems increasingly violent. Kitabu Turner shows us that when take hold of our minds properly, the strength inherit in our spirit is strong enough to meet all adversity. Thanks to Soul Sword, I'm on my way to being a Zen warrior, too.
