Overview

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE MONUMENTAL BESTSELLER, THE SEAT OF THE SOUL

In Soul to Soul Gary Zukav addresses some of the most fundamental questions about the human experience -- from "Why is life so difficult?" to "How can I learn to trust?" -- with profound answers that are of truly universal value.

Soul to Soul provides penetrating insights that illuminate our lives and encourage us to examine our own experiences in new and perhaps life-changing ways. Combining true spirituality with profound psychological insight, Zukav also answers nearly one hundred of the most important questions about life that anyone could ask, including:

• Do we have a destiny?

• Can you prove that life exists after death?

• What is the meaning of dreams?

• How can I love without fear?

• What is the role of soul in my life?

• How does a person know what he was put on earth to do?

• How can I forgive someone who betrays me again and again?

• How can I really change?

• Does the Universe care about us?

Soul to Soul is profoundly simple, wise, and poetic, a listening experience to return to again and again for guidance and inspiration.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

In 1990 Zukav shifted from science (1980 National Book Award for The Dancing Wu Li Masters) to the realm of the soul (The Seat of the Soul, etc.), ultimately scaling the New York Timesbestseller list four times. This new work claims to be written directly from his heart, and the personal, intimate tone fulfills that promise. The first half explores "soul subjects," or "observations of physical circumstances plus a recognition of what they mean." The second half answers philosophical ponderings labeled here as "soul questions." In very brief essays both sections address key subjects: love, fear, choice, responsibility, letting go, trusting life's processes. In Zukav's understanding, we are all attending Earth School, where in repeated incarnations we are given opportunities to fulfill our soul's mission. He cogently asserts that as more of us gain multi-sensory perception-the ability to intuit meaning beyond data gathered by our five senses-we are coming to understand how our choices impact our every moment and therefore our soul's work. Zukav's Green Beret background seems to inform his writing style: blunt, terse, effective, commanding. Rich in insight and compassion, Zukav's advanced efforts will likely zoom to the top again. His probing choice-revenge or compassion-regarding September 11th is alone more than worth the cost of the book. (Oct. 23)

From the introduction to Part One:

Exploring Soul Subjects

A Soul Subject is not a mental creation. It is an observation. It is a perception that resonates with a deeper part of yourself than the intellect can reach. Not every perception is a Soul Subject. To the five senses — taste, touch, sight, smell, and hearing — a perception is data about the physical world. A Soul Subject is a multisensory perception. It is an observation of physical circumstances plus a recognition of what they mean.

Last week a group of friends met. One of us found a thorn — from a thistle growing along a nearby stream — in the carpet in front of him. I noticed him pondering it as we met. At the end of the meeting he said, "This thorn is the defensive part of a plant. It has been helping me to realize that I am open to people now in ways that I have never been before. I don't need the defenses that I used to have."

That was a Soul Subject. It was more than the perception of a wayward thorn. It was the recognition of a new freedom that had been calling him. How many Soul Subjects have you noticed in your life today? If you are looking, you will see them unfolding before you each moment, like my friend did when he pondered finding a thorn in the carpet — a thorn that no longer defended the plant that grew it.

We live in a world of meaning. That world is the Earth school, the physical arena of our personal and collective experiences. We are the students. Our experiences are the curriculum.

They are our Soul Subjects. Let's explore them now
