All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Continuing his stroll through pop's back pages, Rod Stewart moves on from the "Great Rock Classics of Our Time" and dives into the Soulbook, shorthand for all the great Motown and soul songs that still are in heavy rotation on oldies radio well into the new millennium. Apart from an oddly funkified spin of Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World" and a version of Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" that illustrates just how much range he's lost over the years, Rod doesn't spend much time with the soul and blues singers so influential on him, choosing instead to run through a bunch of Motown hits -- a full six of the 13 songs here are from the ...

All this is firmly within Stewart's wheelhouse; these arrangements are all designed to evoke memories, not to dig into the heart of the songs. It's all pleasing, flowing better than the Great American Songbook albums.

    WONDERFUL

no matter what he sings, he sings it right. i think that this cd is defintely one of his best. he's had my heart ever since i heard him sing "angel" about 36 years ago, when i was in my teens. i've seen him 28 times and every time it was better. i guess what they say about getting better with age is very true, because he just keeps getting better and better.

    Rod gets better and better!

I never bought a Rod Stewart album in his heyday, but love the "new" Rod Stewart, having bought all his Great American Songbooks. Rod's Soulbook is a great compilation and he does the songs justice. It's the kind of CD that you can listen to over and over. It's great to listen to anywhere - at home, at work, or in the car. I hope he continues to turn out more CDs of this type since I will surely buy them all. I might even reconsider his early works since I have a new appreciation of him! Maggie May had been my favorite, but now there's too many good ones to choose a favorite!

Soulful music to lift & soothe the heart & soul

This is not the Rod Stewart of the 60's! This is the new Rod Stewart. I love, love, this CD. It is romantic, soulful, uplifting, and so enjoyable to listen to.

    Always, Rod Stewart!

He has always been one of my favorite singers. He hasn't been like a lot of singers who still try to sing like the used to.

He has changed his type of singing to a new level. Love all the songs that he now makes his own.

Rod Stewart, please keep up the good work!

    more from this reviewer

    Rod Stewart's "Soulbook"

I love this CD, although first time around I had an issue with the numbers as I was used to the orginal versions. By the time I listened the second time, I got into his rhythm and as they say, the rest is history...

    Great!

    Rod Stewart Scores Again

This latest entry in Rod Stewart's collection of classic pre-rock and old-rock songs is a good grouping. Rod's voice added to these memorable songs is great to hear.
