Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A serviceable reference work to the most notable motion picture soundtrack composers, this guide is divided into three parts: a history of movie soundtracks, an overview of major composers, and a list of important scores currently available, including reissues. Journalist Burlingame (Variety, the Hollywood Reporter, and the Washington Post) has written an informative history, particularly for the novice fan. The composer entries, comprising the bulk of the book, are alphabetically listed and include pertinent biographical information and capsulated synopses of their soundtrack credits. Thanks to the thorough composer/songwriter and film indexes and the substantial bibliography, this is a functional introduction to soundtrack history and its key players. However, libraries needing one comprehensive reference on the topic are directed to MusicHound Soundtracks: The Essential Album Guide to Film, Television, and Stage Music (LJ 4/15/00).--David M. From The Critics
In Sound And Vision: 60 Years Of Motion Picture Soundtracks, Jon Burlingame has created an indispensable, seminal, very highly recommended reference guide featuring a detailed history of Hollywood film music on record and compact disc. Also included are uptodate biographical sketches of soundtrack composers from the inception of the movies down to the present day. Annotated listings of the bestselling, awardwinning, or otherwise memorable soundtracks of the past and present (original film scores as well as movie musicals and songcompilation scores) further enhance this marvelous compendium. Of special note is the "user friendly" and comprehensive index so that the reader can quickly reference whether a particular piece of movie music is commercially available.

    Outstanding in all respects!

This is a marvellous book! Clearly a labour of love by the author, it is nonetheless entirely professionally written and produced. Jon Burlingame's enthusiasm for the project is visible from the outset, eliciting, as he has, a foreword from one of America's leading film critics, Leonard Maltin, before going on to explain the modus operandi behind the writing of the book. Wisely, it doesn't set out to be a comprehensive, definitive guide to film music composers and their recordings - this would have been impractical both in terms of the writing and the eventual weight of the tome! But what he has done is to include a mini- biography of every important film music composer from the past to the present day, and a selection of what he considers to be their best works. So, it's not only an invaluable reference guide to the wonderful musicians who have dominated the film industry, but also provides a fascinating debating point as to which scores should or should not have been included. Personally, I think he's got it about right! I was also pleased to see a large number of photos of the composers and occasional record sleeve reproductions. Many people will be familiar with the appearance of John Williams, John Barry, Henry Mancini and Elmer Bernstein, but let's hear it for some of his choices from the 'golden age' like Miklos Rozsa, Alfred Newman, Hugo Friedhofer and Franz Waxman. This is truly an indispensable book for lovers of film music, but will surely also appeal to lovers of cinema. Outstanding in all respects and thoroughly recommended!

    A Fine Book

Burlingame's book is excellent. There are very few worthy books written about film music, so all fans should purchase this one immediately. And look--it's not expensive either. Sound and Vision is well researched, and more important, compiled by a professional who actually loves film music. It's not a collection of insulting fan-written CD reviews that give top ratings to the worst scores ever written. It's instead valuable and interesting information.
