Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the wonderful "iScience Readers" series, Sohn and Bair explain the physics of sound. What causes sound? "All sounds begin with vibrations," they write. "When something vibrates it moves back and forth quickly. Pluck a rubber band or a guitar string. Boing! You will see the object bounce back and forth." From vibrations they move to explanations of why sounds are high and low, how sound travels, and what makes sounds louder or softer. All of these topics are handled with clarity and appropriate grade-level vocabulary. However, what makes these books unique to the early science field is the "iScience Puzzle" the authors put at the beginning of each book. In this case, the puzzle challenges the readers to make their own instruments out of plastic bottles and cardboard boxes. Then the writers ask how the kids will use the objects and how will they make sounds. The puzzles give the reader a good reason to keep going, reading each section and gathering clues so that by the end, the answers are clear. Bright pictures illustrate the book. Backmatter includes glossary, further reading, and an index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
