Meet the Author


Genevieve Graham graduated from the University of Toronto in 1986 with a Bachelor of Music in Performance. While on a ski vacation in Alberta, she met her future husband in a chairlift line and subsequently moved to Calgary to be with him. They have recently settled in a small town in Nova Scotia with their two beautiful daughters, their Chinese Crested Powderpuff, and seven exotic chickens—no shortage of muses. Writing became an essential part of Genevieve’s life a few years ago when she began to write her debut novel, Under the Same Sky.

    Review: Sound of the Heart

    I was a little hesitant to read this at first because I haven't read the companion novel. I wasn't sure how much they were connected and if it really mattered. I decided to read it anyway just because I liked the idea of it. And well... I like stories set in the Scottish Highlands.

    I was immediately thrown into a very familiar battlefield. I half expected to meet Jaimie from Outlander in these opening pages. It actually had a very similar feel to that story. I liked Dougal from the moment we meet him. I love the sense of family we get and how he immediately knows something is wrong because of who is standing beside him. It doesn't take long from the real battle to begin because we all know what happens at Culloden.

    I thought it was interesting that Dougal was just as concerned for the well being of others as he was for his own. It doesn't take him long to make a friend with the same beliefs as his own and for them to take a young pair of boys under their wings. In return, those boys help them escape. But, sadly only two make it out alive.

    For the longest time, I wondered when we would be Glenna. She seemed like she should be someone we meet in the opening pages. When we finally do, it really seemed like a "duh moment" to me. The clues were all there. I didn't understand her at first, but her actions began to make sense. She was doing the only thing she knew for most of her life. It became harder and harder to shake off that lifestyle.

    I actually think the only downfall of this novel was that is could have been longer. A lot of time is covered in this book and a few events just barely glanced over. It never felt long and I was disappointed when it ended. I will be seeking out the companion book though. I think it might hold some answers to the questions that I have!

    Dougal MacDonnell, from Invergarry, is a fierce Highland warrior

    Dougal MacDonnell, from Invergarry, is a fierce Highland warrior of Scotland. During the Battle of Culloden in April, 1746, Dougal is separated from his brothers and sees his father fall. Devastated by the loss of his family, Dougal becomes a prisoner of the English. During this time Dougal strikes up a friendship with John Wallace, another prisoner. Together they keep all of the other prisoners from preying upon the two drummer boys, Joseph and Aiden. (Skipping a lot here to avoid spoilers.) .......

    Dougal falls in love with Glenna and the pair spend many years together living in an abandoned croft. But the Sassenach still scour Scotland, searching for all Highlanders, and it is only a matter of time before Dougal and Glenna are discovered. Glenna is captured, shipped overseas, and forced into indentured servitude. Dougal joins an English army made of vanquished Scots and sails for the colonies in hope of locating his Glenna. (Skipping a lot here to avoid spoilers.) Glenna, believing Dougal to be dead, fights simply to survive. And Dougal will risk everything for the chance to find his true love. .........

    ***** FOUR AND A HALF STARS! This book is broken into two parts. Part One is a little over two hundred pages and follows Dougal. Most of my synopsis covers it. Part Two follows Glenna, from the moment she is captured in Scotland, and is around ninety pages in length. .........

    Those who read the reviews on my site know that I always warn of any cruelty to animals and children. Rest assured there is no need to fear either type of cruelty within the pages of this novel. I also warn readers of any forced intercourse. Readers will find one or two unwilling scenes; however, the author glosses over these parts. Nothing is too graphic and readers with very soft hearts should have no trouble. In fact, I am very impressed with how Genevieve Graham handled it all. ........

    Graham has a rich writing style that flows smoothly and backgrounds of the characters are well developed. The only thing that I do not recall ever learning is Glenna’s last name, but for this tale I do not feel it to be important. As for the battles, especially at the beginning, Genevieve Graham brought the fields of war to such vivid life that they seemed chillingly real at times. I could almost feel the ground quake from the cannons, see the fear or anger in surrounding faces, and smell the stink of death. I am proud to highly recommend this story to everyone I meet.     Sweeping Historical Romance

    The Highlands of Scotland and Colonial America are two of my favorite settings for historical romance. Genevieve Graham combines the two in a sweeping saga that takes the reader on a breathtaking, and often heartbreaking, journey from the battlefield of Culloden to the wilds of Colonial America.

    For a man like Dougal MacDonnell, the Battle of Culloden is a nightmare. Faced with the loss of his family and friends at the hands of English soldiers, Dougal experiences the added pain of being able to “hear” the thoughts of the dying men around him, including his own father. Dougal has been able to hear other men’s thoughts his entire life but never in such a heartbreaking way.

    When the fighting ends, Dougal is the only member of his family left to endure the brutal torture of English imprisonment. Hope appears in the form of a fellow prisoner, a young lad who helps Dougal escape and, together, they make their way back to Scotland. For two years, they live in an abandoned cottage and work the land, slowly returning to a somewhat normal life but always watching over their shoulders. It is during this time that Dougal discovers Glenna, a young woman with a most unusual background who captures his heart deeply and completely. Their happy ending is within sight but, unfortunately, the English are not quite finished with them. (This was a time in history when England was determined to erase the people and traditions of Scotland from existence or at least from the British Isles.) Captured, Dougal is once again imprisoned while Glenna is destined for a life of indentured servitude in America. Only by agreeing to serve the hated English in a military regiment comprised of Highland warriors does Dougal have any hope of ever finding his beloved Glenna. But America is a huge country and he has only the strength of his love to guide him. Will he ever again hold her close and hear the sound of her heart?

    I enjoyed this book very much. It’s filled with fascinating bits of history, without making me feel like I’m in a history lecture, and the kind of sweeping, epic love story that keeps me reading into the wee hours of the morning. Her vibrant voice, richly emotional story and fast paced story kept my attention from the first page to the final word. Graham has created a hero and heroine that I liked and admired from start to finish and their actions throughout their joint, and separate, journeys only reinforced those feelings.

    This book is true to the times in which it is set and those were not easy times. Therefore, there are some scenes that are hard to read, especially some that involve Glenna’s life after arriving in America. Sure, the author could have glossed over the more unappealing aspects of the life servants and prisoners were forced to endure back then but I, for one, am glad she remained true to her characters and the conditions in which they were forced to live. It may break my heart and make me uneasy at times but, by giving us the entire picture, she gives us the entire person. Not a surface shot but the richly layered, complex individual; forged by both the good and bad events in their lives.

    I'll look forward to reading more by this talented author!

    What I Loved: Genevieve Graham does an amazing job writing an enriching and beautiful story without hampering it down with pages and pages of historical facts. Sound of the Heart is a heart-wrenching story of war and love. Graham pens her novel with great care. I truly enjoyed each page even as she gripped my heart and twisted.

    Dougal and Glenna are amazing together. Truthfully I can’t see either of them with anyone else. I think what I enjoyed the most about Sound of the Heart are the surprises that Graham has peppered throughout it! Some of them made my jaw drop while others brought tears to my eyes.

    What I Could Have Lived Without: While I am a huge fan of historical romance, there are things I wish hadn’t happened or didn’t occur on a regular basis. Graham doesn’t sugar coat it. As a reader it doesn’t sit well with me but it doesn’t ruin a book for me either. I know that women were held in inferior status and so that led some men to believe they could do as they pleased. So while I could have lived without it, the story wasn’t ruined for me.

    Recommended For: Readers looking for historical fiction with a healthy dose of romance.

    Avoid If: You prefer your historical romance to be fluffy and gloss over the yucky bits of history we’d rather forget.

    lovely love story

    I loved Genevieve's first novel Under the Same Sky so I was thrilled to read her second - Sound of the Heart. It did not disappoint. Genevieve writes beautiful love stories - lots of great characters and beautiful stories. She doesn't rely on sex to sell the story. I love that!

    So, Sound of the Heart. It is a companion to Under the Same Sky but stands alone without any difficulty. While Under the Same Sky tells Andrew's story, Sound of the Heart tells the story of Andrew's brother, Dougal. Dougal is captured after the fight at Culloden and that's where his adventure, and this book, begin. Along the way we meet kindred spirits, strong women and stronger men. We travel England, Ireland, Scotland and the USA. We enjoy amazing highs and terrible lows. There is no emotional stone left unturned as the reader moves from page 1 to page 310. I can't wait for Genevieve Graham's next offering.

    Sound of The Heart is a companion novel to Genevieve Graham’s debut release, Under The Same Sky. The books focus on the separate adventures of two brothers who believe the other was lost at the Battle of Culloden. In Under The Same Sky, readers are introduced to Dougal MacDonnell, Andrew’s brother who is believed to have died in battle. It is later revealed in Sound of The Heart that Dougal is in fact still alive and is an incredible warrior. Dougal and his family are Highlanders in Scotland, and while trying to save their home land from the crown, Dougal is captured by the British. Unfortunately back home, there are not many survivors.

    Along with the help of those who have befriended Dougal, the men devise a plan to escape their captors. Once going over all the details, there is only one issue that is left in the minds of those involved… What will happen to the men after they gain their freedom?

    At the risk of revealing too much of the story, I will just quickly mention that there is a female character named Glenna that plays a primary role along with Dougal in this historical fiction novel. Although the novel's synopsis gives you a little hint as to what to expect, you will all just have to read the novel yourselves to find out more about the relationship between these two characters *winks*!

    My favorite aspects of the novel were the underlying meanings of the storyline. Sound of The Heart is about finding strength in moments of despair and never giving up without a fight. The characters showed a tremendous amount of bravery, honesty, and passion. They were engaging throughout the novel and every character played an important role and even if they only appeared on a few pages, they stand out and will leave a long-lasting impression on readers. I also enjoyed how the novel was split into parts and had alternating point of views between the two main characters.

    With a rich flair of history and a great deal of romance, readers will once again fall in love with Genevieve Graham’s second novel, Sound of The Heart. I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this fantastic author.

    I recommend Sound of The Heart to those who enjoy Historical Romance and Adult Fiction titles.

    I really enjoyed this book. I have a lot of interest in Scottish history because of William Wallace and Rob Roy so any chance I get to read a book with Scottish characters and set in Scotland is wonderful. Set in 18th century Scotland, with settings in England and the American colonies as well, Sound of the Heart is an exciting historical tale with two extraordinary characters, Dougal and Glenna. I'm not usually big on romance in novels, but the relationship between the two main characters is so sweet and genuine, I couldn't help but enjoy reading about their times together. Graham has taken one of the difficult periods in Scottish history, the time of the Jacobite rebellion, and turned it into a story of personal triumph and love. She has written the dialogue in Scottish brogue, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I likened myself to a Scottish lassie as I experienced the Scottish intonations in my head.

    I highly recommend Sound of the Heart to anyone who enjoys Scottish history with a bit of romance added to the mix. Now I must check out Graham's first novel, Under the Same Sky. She is a talent I will not soon forget.

    Dougal McDonnell is fighting at the battle of Culloden when he is separated from his family and taken prisoner. After being imprisoned in ghastly conditions, Dougal escapes and begins a new life in the Scottish Highlands with his newly found love, Glenna. Things go wonderfully for a while, but when Glenna is taken by the British soldiers and sent to the American colonies, Dougal must join the enemy for the chance to save her.

    I literally could not put this book down! While Jamie Frasier is my favorite Scotsman, Dougal McDonnell is now a (very) close second. He is everything a woman wants: strong, handsome, caring, protective... the list goes on and on. I fell in love with him quite quickly! So, obviously I loved his character, but I enjoyed the other characters as well. They were all very realistic, easily understandable, and likable. As with her first novel, Graham does an amazing job of steeping Sound of the Heart in historical detail and I was instantly taken back to 1700's Scotland and surrounded by the sounds, smells, and fear associated with the Battle of Culloden. I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say that there are a few twists and turns that I wasn't quite expecting and made the book that much more interesting and compulsively readable. Graham has definitely made her way on my "must read author" list.

    If there's one thing that every romance fan should hope for when

    If there's one thing that every romance fan should hope for when diving into a new historical romance, it would most definitely be for the historical part to be done right. It isn't all that hard to write a steamy, heart-pounding romance, but to set it against a historical background that would not only be accurate, but also incredibly vivid, juicy and bursting with flavour - that, my friends, is a great accomplishment. No one does historical romance the way Genevieve Graham does. She weaves a fantastic tale packed with the sweetest kind of romance, breathtaking adventure, and just a tiny bit of magic, and she does it in the most superb, addictive way. You'll love it!

    The novel kicks-off with the Battle of Culloden, just like Under The Same Sky did, only this time around Genevieve explores the adventures of Andrew MacDonnel's brother, Dougal. I absolutely loved reading about Andrew and Maggie in Graham's previous book, and you can only imagine how incredibly happy I was to know that now I'll get to meet and learn more about his brother! Just like Andrew, Dougal is fierce, devoted to his family and country, and he possesses a special talent that allows him to hear other men's thoughts and see the future in his dreams. The Battle of Culloden will change his life forever. He'll lose everyone he ever cared about and will be captured by the English army. He'll then manage to escape with the help of a young lad, Aiden, and he'll travel back to the highlands where he'll meet a girl that will steal his heart. It's the love for Glenna that will push him to travel across the seas to America, where he'll risk everything to get his love back.

    Sound Of The Heart is a novel that will enchant you and sweep you off your feet! I loved how fast-paced and adventurous it was. The story flows effortlessly and doesn't let you catch your breath. The romance, too, is spine-tingling and sweet as honey, but its definitely the action and the fabulously depicted settings that ultimately made this book for me. It's remarkable how accurate and spot-on Graham's descriptions of fights and battles are - you would not expect a lady to be able to capture the heat, desperation and spirit of a battle so brilliantly. And yet she does it so well! You're instantly transported in the middle of a battlefield, and you can almost hear the cling of metal and all the war cries. Graham's writing style makes it easy to lose yourself in the story. Her characters are painfully authentic, their feelings and struggles - all too believable and heart wrenching. Before you know it, you'll be emotionally wrapped up in the plot and biting your nails!

    I loved all the characters, but I especially enjoyed reading about Dougal. Some aspects of his personality reminded me of Andrew, some were totally different, but overall he was a fabulous protagonist that I came to love and admire. Not only is he steaming hot and build like a model, but he also has a beautiful soul and a lion's heart. There's just no way you could dislike him as a person, he's wonderful!

    Sound Of The Heart is a book that I would recommend to everyone, regardless if you're a fan of the genre. It has everything a good book should have: sweeping love story, mind-blowing adventure, brilliant characters, engaging plot line and irresistible charm. Even if romance novels are not usually on your reading list, give this one a chance, you'll be surprised how much you'll enjoy it! I HIGHLY recommend it!

    In Genevieve Graham's first novel, Under the Same Sky, we are left believing that Andrew's brother, Dougal MacDonnell has been killed in combat on the fields of Culloden. In the latest book, Sound of the Heart, we happily find out that is not the case, but his situation is dire. Dougal awakens after the battle hurting and bound by restraints. He, along with several other survivors of the infamous battle are taken as prisoners by the British who wish to strip them of any connection to their proud Scottish heritage Along the way he meets John Wallace , with whom he forges a friendship.

    Dougal also becomes protector to two young boys who were drummers in the war, Joseph and Aiden, after some unsavory characters on the ship attempt to violate the boys. They all journey from the awful voyage on squalid ship, to an equally foul prison camp where even their traditional plaids and bagpipes are banned they survive as well as can be expected. When John sees the camp devoid of any of his Scottish heritage, he says "So Scotland is gone." while Dougal replies to him "No John, She is only in hiding."

    After a time the foursome devise of a plan to escape the prison, which goes awry when the British announce a lottery to draw between prisoners that will stand trial for war crimes and those who will be shipped to the British colonies. John Wallace gets chosen to stand trial and Dougal, Joseph and Aiden attempt escape. The only two successful during the escape are Dougal and Aiden.

    Once free, the pair, who become quick friends, travel through Scotland in an attempt to steer clear of the English, while finding a new home.Finally settling in an abandoned cottage the pair make a new life with what little they can find. Things go fairly well until one day Aiden is attacked and Dougal discovers a secret Aiden had been hiding for years, Aiden is a female and her real name is Glenna.

    Yes, things become quite complicated after the discovery because as it would seem, the pair have an attraction to one another. At first they both attempt to toss aside their attraction and their feelings, but to no avail. When tragedy befalls them and they are separated once again by their enemies we find Glenna transported to America thinking Dougal dead, and Dougal once again a prisoner with a chance to go to America as part of the British military.

    Will Glenna and Dougal ever be reunited? Will they still feel the same for one another after their trials and tribulations? You will have to find out when you read Sound of the Heart by Genevieve Graham!

    Once again I was drawn in immediately. Genevieve Graham brings to life Scotland and America in the 1740's. At the same time Dougal is big and gruff, he is also kind and patient. Once Glenna's true self is revealed, we find her to be self sufficient and intelligent. The pair are a wonder to follow on their journey. Just as I loved Under the Same Sky and recommended it highly, I do the same for it's sequel Sound of the Heart and I think you all will enjoy it every bit as much as I did.

    The Sound of Heart by historical fiction romance author Geneviev

    The Sound of Heart by historical fiction romance author Genevieve Graham takes us from the sweeping hills of Scotland to the savage shores of America. When Graham approached me for this tour she had me at the words; Scotland and Highlander. I am delighted to say I wasn't disappointed. She delivered an epic tale of hardship, history, and a romance that will captivate readers.

    The tale begins with Dougal MacDonnell, a swoon worthy warrior. He and his family are Highlanders in Scotland. They are trying to save their beloved home land from King Charles and his merciless men. Dougal sees his father fall and ends up being captured by the English. He and others are marched to prison. Along the way he befriends a Scot named John, and two young men. The journey is horrific and Dougal makes himself champion to the young men as he protects them. At the prison a chance for escape goes wrong and only Dougal and a young lad named Aidan make it. They journey together back to the highlands and live quietly for a while in an abandoned cabin. It is here that Dougal meets Glenna and the two fall in love. Things are blissful until a group of King Charles men show up, capture Glenna and leave Dougal for dead. The tale that unfolds is captivating and held me till the last page. Graham's tale takes us from prison cells to to the shores of colonial America.

    I loved the characters. Glenna is a pistol. She is both witty and brave. Her love for Dougal helps her remain strong. I loved how she defended those weaker than her even when doing so could cause her to hang. Dougal is a warrior, he is opinionated, brave and has a strong moral compass. In my opinion he is completely swoon worthy martial. Like Glenna he defends those who are weak and hates the English with a passion. Aidan and John the Scot were interesting characters and I grew fond of them. Graham introduces many colorful secondary characters who add depth and make the story come alive.

    Graham's use of historical events and descriptions of the country side were delightful. The tale had an even tempo and was beautifully written. The characters had depth, passion and they made the tale feel genuine. I loved moving from the POV of Dougal to the POV of Glenna. I will not go into details, but Graham delivers a twist that was quite shocking and had me laughing aloud. She painted images of Scotland, the prisons, the sea and America that were delightful to the historical lover in me. While this is a romance and there is sexual content, Graham did a splendid job of making it implied and sweet. I rooted for Glenna and Dougal and prayed for a happily ever-after. While the ending completed their story, Graham ended in such a way that additional novels regarding Dougal and his brothers are a possibility.     Sound of the Heart is the first historical Romance novel that I'

    Sound of the Heart is the first historical Romance novel that I've red in over a year and let me tell you it was a like a breath of fresh air. Genevieve Graham did an excellent job with her second book. It is a companion to her novel debut, Under the Same Sky and follows Dougal MacDonnell, the brother of Andrew.

    Sound of the Heart starts in 1746 during the battle between the Scots and English at Culloden. Right away the book drew me in, enabling me to experience the sights and sounds as if they were my own. It is here that we meet Dougal MacDonnell. The black haired, blue eyed Highlander fought along side his father and brothers against the English with everything that he had. Unfortunately, they were defeated and Dougal was taken prisoner under the assumption that the rest of his family was dead. Thus begins a series of adventures that brought both good and bad times.

    I've never been a history buff so the dates, battles and forts named in this book didn't register much for me - well, except for Fort Ticonderoga because it's located near where I live. What registered for me about this book was the wonderful detail that Genevieve put in. I loved reading about the way of life for the Highlanders. Both in and out of prison. The conditions of the prison ship was especially atrocious. All the little details and intricacies where in place and made me feel as if I were living in a movie. The accents were spectacular and I could here the voices in my mind. The clarity of the scenes that were brought before me with the authors words was amazing.

    The romance between Glenna and Dougal was real and heartfelt. I'll admit though, that while I was reading this I was wondering where the romance was. It seemed to take forever to meet Glenna. Then suddenly, Ms. Graham throws us a twist and all is revealed. The twist was a true "Holy Crap!" moment of surprise. Looking back I can see the foreshadowing of the event but it was done in a masterfully subtle way. Another aspect of the romance between Glenna and Dougal was the loyalty and devotion that was between them from the verra beginning.

    There was only one thing that upset me about the book. It spans about 15 years. That in itself is not the problem. It might just be an editing mistake but it seems as if Genevieve made at least one timeline boo boo. It threw me off my game.

    Sound of the Heart is a solid read that will make you wonder. If your looking for a great historical romance that paints pictures with words then Sound of the Heart is it!

    Oh, the horrors of pants...

    The plaids were replaced by shirts and breeks. Dougal hated the breeks. He felt confined in every sense of the word. They chafed the insides of his thighs, they blocked ventilation... and they forced him to pick a side.

    An EXCELLENT 5 STAR ROMANCE

    A couple of months ago I was approached by the author to review her book as part of her blog tour, and of course I had to say yes because a lot of you know that this is my favourite genre. How could I refuse to read it?

    I well and truly fell hard for Dougal MacDonnell, much like the same way that I fell for Diana Gabaldon's character Jamie Fraser. It was just that good of a book, it really was. I thought that Genevieve did a fantastic job of writing a book from the male point of view (for the most part) and was successful in the fact that while she created Dougal as a strong male lead he lacked much of the arrogance that is found in other books of this genre which was a great change.

    What first grabbed me was the author's close attention to detail and by reading her book you can tell she chose her words carefully and laid out the plot, which in my opinion was fantastic. I love the rich landscape she presented and I particularly enjoyed the fact that it was set during the Battle of Culloden and the time after. I've always been interested in the history of Scotland and I'd love to pick Genevieve's brain about all she's learned.

    The book while it's classified a a historical romance has a huge amount of adventure interwoven into it, and the adventure for me was what I loved most, that and the fact that Glenna is by no means a pushover and thank goodness she has brain and some backbone, when reading this you won't be met with the usual meek heroine which if you read the genre a lot is pretty much the norm.

    Since this was my first time reading a book by the author I was was really surprised by how much I loved and enjoyed reading about Dougal and Glenna and I think that the fact that Genevieve took the time to ensure that the characters actually talked as they would have in the time period was fantastic. I've read several historical romances that have been set during the same time but the writers had the characters talking as though they were living in modern times which takes away from the book in my opinion.

    I'm really glad that I had the opportunity to review Sound of the Heart for Genevieve because she's an excellent story teller. I really hope that she keeps writing because I can't get enough of her writing. There's just something magical about the way she writes that I love and to top it all off she's really nice!

    I would have absolutely no problem recommending this book to anyone. Whether you're new to the genre or one that you've been reading for awhile this is a gem that really can't be missed. My only regret is that the author has a previously published book that I haven't read yet (but have it on hold at the library). I have a feeling that I'm going to speed write through that one as well. So basically if you're looking for a great read give this one a try. It's a great book to cuddle up with and read in your favourite spot. Hopefully it will enthrall you like it did me, so what are you waiting for? GO BUY IT!!

    Breathtaking Scottish romance! If you are looking for a beautifu

    Breathtaking Scottish romance!
    If you are looking for a beautifully written Scottish romance of a Warrior from the Highlands of Scotland, then I highly recommend "Sound of the Heart" by Genevieve Graham. This novel was full of tenderness and adventure. I devoured this book. I read "Under the same sky" and loved it , but found this one breathtaking. It's the story of Dougal and Glenna! Dougal, is not dead, as I thought after reading her first novel, he found himself prisoner by the British after the battle of Culloden. These British soldiers will try to make Dougal forget his Scottish heritage. During his captivity, he will make friends with John, Aiden, Joseph and they will try to escape. Will they be able to run way! Dougal will, also, soon discover who is really Aiden, the young and shy drummer boy! This writer was able to describe in details the lives of the soldiers and their family after the battle of Culloden. I do not want to spoil the story for the readers and not give any details. You will have to read this amazing story! I highly recommend this historical romance. Very well written, had me hooked from the first page and could not put it down. Ms. Graham is a very descriptive writer and I love her style of writing. I will surely read this author's next book! She is truly a great writer that I highly recommend! I want to thank Ms. Graham and Penguin Canada for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
