Overview

If you venture past the collections of Andr Kostelanetz and get into his "Plays the Music Of..." and "The Sounds Of..." albums, you soon realize how uneven his work can be. When inspired, he brings a smile to your face through warm and clever orchestration. When he's not, it's tiresome and recalls every clich about easy listening you can remember. It's about fifty-fifty on this collection from Collectables, which is no surprise considering the nature of the rushed recordings included here. For Sounds of Today, the "Today" is 1967. Too many arrangements are overly decorated -- Kostelanetz always covers his lack of ideas with harmonicas and cooing choirs -- but the collection's highlight comes when an elegant pizzicato dance switches off with a Chicago barrelhouse rave-up in "Cabaret." Today's Greatest Movie Hits -- "Today" once again being 1967 -- gives Kostelanetz much more ambitious tunes and a lot more to work with. "Barefoot in the Park" skips along with a cosmopolitan attitude rarely heard from the arranger, and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" recalls the playfulness of "Cabaret." Considering these weren't the only two albums Kostelanetz released in 1967, you've got to at least admire his ability to overcome totally going through the motions. Buy a best-of or greatest-hits collection for a better winner-to-filler ratio.
