Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristen Kelley
Throp provides an engaging overview of South Africa, a land known for its history of apartheid and as home to the "Big Five"—elephants, lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, and buffalos. She begins with an historical sketch of the country, discussing the impact of the arrival of the Dutch, followed by the British; the discovery of diamonds and gold; the repressive apartheid system; and the country's current struggles with economic inequality, HIV/AIDS, and crime. After covering general facts about the country—its economy, government, climate, school system, etc., Thorp includes an extensive section on South African music, art, religion, sports, festivals, and food, even including a recipe for buttermilk rusks. Basic phrases in Afrikaans and Zulu are sprinkled throughout the book. Throp also plays on the interest of her audience by inserting several short entries about daily life and young people in South Africa. The book contains pictures, maps, charts, and graphs that add to its appeal. Throp ends with a quick fact list, a timeline of important dates, a glossary, and a list of resources for those who want to learn more. This book is an excellent introduction to South Africa and a great resource for classrooms or libraries.
