Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Compass Point Books has added a new edition to their super series, "First Reports." South Africa is a comprehensive, slim book filled with facts about this beautiful country. The easy-to-read text is accompanied on every page by a vivid photograph, diagram or illustration that will engage the young reader. Some of the chapters include information about geography, land use, plants and animals of the region. The struggles of the people and a look at their fascinating customs and cultures will inspire. Special sections, "Did You Know" and "At A Glance," convey fast-facts and important dates about South Africa. Endnotes include a glossary and a section where readers can find more resources at the library or on the Web. This volume is an excellent resource for the home library or the intermediate classroom. 2002, Compass Point Books,

Gr 2-5-Both books have attractive photographs that, for the most part, complement the simple texts. Each one begins with a descriptive passage about the land in question and then presents a map that shows the country in a regional context. The photographs offer appealing scenery and smiling residents engaged in work or recreational activities. Unfortunately, these countries have complex histories and face many serious problems today, which are only briefly alluded to in the narratives. Readers are therefore presented with a somewhat idyllic portrait of each nation without any opportunity to understand its challenges. Neither title offers significant information about the lifestyles or culture of the people. While not highly useful for reports, these books do offer children a first glance at a country in an inviting way that may inspire further exploration. This series is no better or worse than most geography series for a similar audience. Consider them where needed.-Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
