This history begins with the years before white domination and weaves together the many threads leading to the consolidation of a white state. The final three chapters discuss the sharing of power and the quest for humane values. Saunders (history, U. of Cape Town) now shares authorship with original author Davenport (emeritus, history, Rhodes U., Grahamstown). The first edition was published in 1977; the fourth in 1991. This new edition is substantially revised and updated and contains a brief foreword by Desmond Tutu. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
