Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Welcome to South America, home of the Amazon Rainforest, the biggest in the world! Reading this short but fact-filled introduction to one of the world's seven continents offers a glimpse into its many different cultures, land features, populations and native animals. Important skills of literacy are promoted throughout the two-page spreads with colorful, clear photos or maps on the left side and one to three easily read sentences in large font on the right side. This format lends itself easily to print motivation by capturing the reader's interest while also enjoying the supporting pictures. The organization of the book, such as the Table of Contents, Index, a Words You Know section, Facts for Now and About the Author help the young reader understand that print can convey different functions. Other titles in the "Rookie Read-About Geography" series include Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. All titles support the reader through consistency in book and chapter format. Chapter headings are large blue font while supporting chapters such as Facts and Words You Know are in large green font. Each of the seven titles contains a chapter on Modern Marvels that reverses the page spread, highlighting a clear colorful photo on the right side. This title highlights the Itaipu Dam in South America where workers had to move a river to build the dam. A one-page chapter highlights an animal in the region with readers meeting a Jaguar in this title. A simple but informative series that allows even the youngest reader to enjoy taking a picture walk through the pages. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid
