Overview

From the creator of the South Beach Diet comes a call to change the fast-food, sedentary way of life that’s aging us quickly and killing us slowly.

There is a proverbial ticking time bomb in our midst. It’s the toxic lifestyle that is wreaking havoc on our nation’s health and well-being and posing an equal threat to everyone from the very young to the very old. In today’s fast-food-obsessed, couch-potato culture, two-thirds of all adults and one-third of all children are either overweight or obese, rates of diabetes and heart disease are soaring, and the future for many of us looks dismal.

The time for a transformation is now, and one of the leading agents of change is renowned cardiologist and creator of the South Beach Diet Dr. Arthur Agatston, who is determined to reverse America’s failing health profile. After explaining how we got to this sorry state, Dr. Agatston introduces his Toxic Turnaround. This empowering program provides realistic strategies and tools everyone can use to shop, cook, eat, and exercise better—improving the family table, getting quality sleep, reducing stress, and making our homes and communities healthier. Informed by cutting-edge research and the tenets of a diet that has already changed the way America eats, this book goes to the next level, providing a blueprint for all Americans to make positive and sustainable lifestyle changes that will not only improve their own health but that of generations to follow.

As a bonus, The South Beach Wake-Up Call includes 30 new, easy-to-prepare recipes featuring Dr. Agatston’s top “mega foods” for better health.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

There is no way to cushion the news: Americans have become over-plump butterball couch potatoes. Two-thirds of our adults are either overweight or obese and a one-third of our children are already headed down the same path. With news of middle-school heart attacks and soaring rates of diabetes and cardiac maladies, it's time to put a stop to our toxic lifestyle ways. In his latest book, South Beach Diet doctor Arthur Agatston doesn't just sound the alarm; he provides a turnaround program designed to give you the tools you need to shop, cook, eat, sleep, and, yes, exercise better. His realistic program offers a blueprint for changes that can literally save the lives of those you love—including yourself. (P.S. The South Beach Wake Up Call is enhanced by 30 original easy-to-prepare recipes.)

Publishers Weekly
Rather than writing a sequel touting his best-selling book, The South Beach Diet, cardiologist Agatston addresses additional facets of Americans' unhealthy lifestyles. Readers will recognize many of the foibles discussed here: sloppy food shopping, shortchanging sleep, and casual parenting among them. Plenty of stats support Agatston's contentions and colorful warnings abound: "Medical advances are showing us that our vessels and organs are rusting in a manner similar to a poorly maintained vehicle." Agatston offers testimonials from those winning the health battles and presents a riveting chapter on gluten that serves as a veritable expose on unrefined grains. The latter part of the book provides strategies to reverse a toxic lifestyle, a master shopping list for a healthy diet, and a number of recipes—some delicious, some not so much. (Sept.)
Library Journal
Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet and its sequels, here discusses the severe health problems that American eating habits are creating in both adults and children. To prevent or resolve these problems, he suggests ways of making the South Beach plan part of a whole family lifestyle. He recommends homemade meals eaten together around a table and consisting of lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in addition to lean protein. He also strongly advises the purchase of organic foods whenever possible. A good, solid approach to health management for the whole family.

I highly recommend. I read the first southbeach diet book and followed it as a weight loss book, but I quickly lost interest. But after reading Wake Up, it all came together for me. It's not a weight loss book but a lifestyle book andthe weight loss just happens. It's so simple to feel good and look good.
