Children's Literature - Ann Sanger
This publication by Children's Press has many features common with an elementary textbook. In fact, the Contents page and Index are very similar to textbooks I have reviewed. The hardcover has a glossy paper covering with full color photographs of South Dakota's famous Crazy Horse Monument with the model of the planned statue in the foreground. The book is filled with colored drawings and photographs and would be attractive to students and adults. At the front is a "How to Use This Book" section. The special features include original maps, charts, graphs, and sidebars which would be a useful resource for student reports. WOW FACTORS and FAQs are bright spots of color pointing out interesting facts, and giving answers to frequently asked questions about the people and places in South Dakota. Each chapter page has a different one inch band of color which makes it easy to locate in the 144-page book. The Travel Guide chapter gives thirteen pages of exciting things to do and see across the state. In the Project Room there is a complete timeline, fast facts, a biographical dictionary, glossary, and plus pages of writing projects and art projects. This is a resource book every school library should own. Reviewer: Ann Sanger
