Not content to rely on his memory as a gunnery officer and later as executive officer of the USS Maury (DD-401), the author conducted extensive searches of official U.S. and Japanese records in pursuit of the unvarnished truth. The result is a vivid, balanced, and detailed narrative of the destroyer's experiences in the Pacific that earned the warship a Presidential Unit Citation and sixteen battle stars. Captain Crenshaw focuses on the bloody campaign from the Battle of Tassafaronga in November 1942 to Vella Gulf in August 1943, and then completes the picture by chronicling the Maury's actions from Pearl Harbor through the Philippines. In conclusion, armed with facts not known until after the war, Crenshaw discusses the impact of the new technologies of radar and voice radio, the shortcomings of U.S. torpedoes and gunfire, and the devastating effectiveness of Japan's supertorpedo.

    Destroyer activity in 'ironbottom sound'

    A thorough account of destroyer activities in the Solomon Islands in 1943. Crenshaw provides intimate details of the men who served aboard the destroyer USS Maury, including a fascinating glimpse of the famed Admiral, Arleigh A. Burke. The action that Crenshaw describes in the numerous battles the Maury participated in, especially in the battles of Kula and Vella Gulf gets confusing. However, to the naval and historical enthusiast, these little known naval battles are brougt to life in agonizing detail. One can almost smell the smoke and see the ''phantom ship'--the shadow of his own ship in the haze ahead when the muzzles flashed astern'(p.141). In addition to the detailed lives of the men and actions they participated in, the book also has easy to read nautical charts of 'the slot' and certain island groups in the Solomon Islands. With these charts, one can follow the action, even if the narative gets a little confusing. A must read for anyone interested in naval warfare and small unit actions.
