Caught between desire and a promise…

Compass Brothers, Book 2

Seth Compton knew from the first that his boss’s daughter was all wrong for him. She was too feisty, too damned independent and, at seven years his junior, too damned young. When she comes home with a college diploma and fiancé on her arm, though, he can’t quite remember all the reasons he held her at arm’s length.

It’s not just his jeans-tightening reaction to her all-grown-up curves. Something doesn’t feel right about her impending marriage, and he won’t rest until he’s stopped her from making the biggest mistake of her life.

The morning after her wild bachelorette party, Jody expected a hangover. The surprise? Waking up tied to a bed with sexy-as-sin Seth. He’s got some wild idea about proving they belong together, but she’s not buying it. Besides, she has a promise to keep that’s too close to her heart to risk, especially not with a man who, until now, made his disinterest plain.

No one ever said Seth backed down from a challenge. She’s going to make him work for it? No problem. Luckily for him, he has plenty of rope…

Warning: This story contains a bondage lovin’ cowboy who kidnaps and hogties a cowgirl to his bed and does all sorts of naughty things to her. Fun, right?

My Review: This is book #2 of the Compass Brothers series. This book is about the 2nd oldest brother, Seth, who headed South to Texas to find is place in the world working at another family ranch. He's lived and worked there for the last 10 years, since Jody was 12 years old. Jody is the daughter of the ranch owner and she has had a crush on Seth ever since he came to work at the ranch. She's never made her pursuit a secret either. Seth was warned off Jody by her father when she was 18 years old. He wanted her to finish and experience the world through college and Seth respected his wishes. But now Jody has graduated from college and is home with a fiance in tow. After a blow-up at Christmas, Jody has decided to move on with her life and not chase after Seth any longer. Now Seth wonders if he's lost his chance with her and with her father's permission, kidnaps Jody to convince her to give Seth another chance. Jody has been in love with Seth her entire life and, although she has a fiance, she is not in love with him (there are other reasons why they are engaged.) She's been saving herself for Seth so she has an innocence, but she is also really feisty, so she is a great match for Seth and his Dom leanings. They battle and wow, is it sexy. LOTS of passion for these two. They are both strong people, but at the basis of everything is the fact that they both truly love each other desperately. Another hot book in the Compass brothers series. While these books are really hot and sexy, they are also really emotional. I cried several times throughout this book and for me, that is always a sign of a really good book. But I also laughed out loud a lot too. There is a scene when Seth is video-chatting with his brothers on the computer. They can see glimpses of Jody in the background and the entire scene was simply hilarious...so fun and funny! At the basis of all these books is family and I really like that about them. These boys are close and although, they have all gone different directions away from their home ranch, they all remain extremely tight to each other and their parents. A really fabulous book. I love all 4 of the Compass Brothers. They have such a great relationship between all 4 of them and it's so fun to see them each find their loves. There is a LOT of stress to come for this family and watching them pull together even more is going to be heartwrenching. Now I am just waiting for book #3, Eastern Ambitions, due out in November.

Southern Comfort is book two of the Compass Brothers series from Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon, and I have got to admit, these brothers are all hot. Seth Compton always knew he would leave his family's Wyoming ranch for the wide-open Texas spaces. After ten years, he's foreman on the Kirkland spread, his life is great, and that's when the boss' daughter comes home from college after graduation. Seth has avoided her advances for years, knowing that, at seven years his junior, she wasn't ready for his darker side. Seth is dominant in the bedroom, and he wants Jody to be very sure she knows what he's like. Big surprise, though, when Jody returns home with her degree, and a fiancé and a desire to get married immediately. It seems that, after ten years of laying her heart out for Seth to walk on, she's had enough. Now, just when Seth is ready to take what Jody offers, she has taken it off the market. But there is more to the impending nuptials than meets the eye, and Seth is determined to prove to Jody that he is the only one for her. But after a screaming hot weekend tied to Seth's bed, he leaves her while she's asleep, convincing her she was a disappointment to him. She has no idea he left a note, or that he only left because of a family emergency. Can Jody and Seth clear up the misunderstandings keeping them apart? Can Jody accept the type of 'tough love' that Seth offers? Will these two ever get the happy ever after they both deserve. I had a bit of trouble at first, getting into the story, but I went back and read the first book, then started fresh with Seth's story. Once I got started this time around, I couldn't put it down. The story was well crafted, and the characters are all real and very human. The emotions that this story pulled from me were very strong, and I was near tears a couple of times. I mean that in the best possible way, as this kept me reading long after I should have been sleeping. Jody Kirkland is a wonderful character. She is honest, determined and loyal to her friends. She has made no secret of her adoration of Seth, but after ten years, she knows it is time to move on. She agrees to help her best friend get his trust fund by marrying him, but can't lie to herself that she is over Seth. I loved watching her determination to move on to a life that didn't include Seth: too bad her heart didn't get the memo. Seth Compton has worked hard to get where he is, with a good job as ranch foreman, and a place where he is content. He is honest and strong and handsome, and patiently waiting for Jody to grow into the woman he knows is perfect for him. I had to laugh at his reaction when she returned and brought a fiancé with her. I loved watching Seth break through her walls and convince her he always wanted her, but was waiting for her to grow up. This is a terrific romance, but there are a couple of surprises here that I didn't see coming. One involves Seth's father, and I had to grab the tissues there. The other is much lighter, and it involves Jody's fiancé Paul, and his unique solution to his legal quandary. I had to laugh at that one. This one starts out tame, but heats up quite nicely, and I recommend this to all of the die-hard romance junkies in the world. But keep the fan on high, and a cold drink is a necessity. Boring and slow read that only hinted at alpha but never followed thru. If you want a similar story but written very well on all levels - try Lorelei James Shoulda Been a Cowboy or Cowgirl Up and Ride!!

Book about 2nd Compton brother, Seth. Very tame compared to first book (strictly m/f with no menage but some BDSM elements). Wasn't too crazy about this one. Jody, the heroine was very young and immature. This has always been my least favorite type of storyline. Unfortunately, she doesn't really develop during the story and towards the end demonstrates a major lack of maturity when first she jumps to an erroneous conclusion about the motives of the hero despite sound advice from her father to check the facts before she flies off the handle and then lets herself be manipulated into following the hero to Wyoming and potentially embarrassing herself in front of his entire family which in my opinion, she does an admirable job of doing. Seth has been in Texas for about 10 years working on Jody’s daddy's ranch. She has been away at college in New York which you would think would mean she accrued some much needed common sense but alas, this is not the case. Another head scratcher is that for whatever reason, Seth has rarely, if ever been home to Wyoming. I couldn't see the reason for this as he comes from a close-knit family with little or no major conflict with his parents, brothers, or anyone else in Wyoming. In the end a lack of empathy for either character pretty much left me cold on this story. Here’s hoping the 2 remaining books kindle a little more heat with more likeable characters.

Seth was such a gentleman to wait and then such a bad boy to make things work for him. And then a gentleman to give Jody time. There were also lots of emotional twists and turn in regard to Seth's family as well. And the little side issue with Paul was a cute addition and I'm glad his problem got solved as well.

Only read 1 & 2 so far, but they have both been awesome. Hope the other 2 brothers wake up & smell the coffe! Running away or leaving a note isn't the answer, nothing beats a warm body talking, to ease a lovers insecurities. Jody was a spoiled girl, wanting to have her way with Seth, glad Seth had his way with her instead! Was hoping for a little more spitfire antics when Jody found Seth, but still a romantic & hot ending. I would LOVE to read JD & Vicky's story ( must have been a pretty hot romance to bring such sexy, loving men into our lives)-prequel is needed! I think it is awesome how bi-sexual & gay love is handled in such a respectful manner. On to book 3 & 4-can't wait to see what's brewing on the east & west coasts!!
