Crowther (history, Adam's State College) delves into the beliefs, words, and practices of white evangelical Christians in the South as the war overtook them. They admitted that slavery should end, he finds, but remained skeptical of the benefits of modernization. They assumed that God in His own time would either destroy slavery or transmute it into a humane institution, but until then they defended what was good, coherent, and honorable in their own cultural tradition, acquiescing in the divine will because their education as southerners had instilled an ethic of duty and social obligation in them. The study is double spaced. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
