Donald Davis grew up in the mountains of western North Carolina hearing stories that most American children have never heard. He did not know he was hearing anything special, but he was, in fact, learning a number of stories that came to America through Scots-Irish immigrants and were still common family stories even in the early 1950s.

These traditional tales work for all ages. They are basically adventure tales, but they have something to say about human nature. I like that they come from an oral tradition that is hundreds of years old, but are lively and relevant today.

This book is great! Jack has great problem solving skills...they are hilairous, but get the job done. The aurthor does a great job with the southern accent Jack speaks, I'm from North Carolina and I've heard it all... This is my all time favorite book!!!
