Many wrote off Billy Ray Cyrus' bigger-than-life 1992 smash "Achy Breaky Heart" as a flash in the pan and dismissed Cyrus as a one-hit wonder. But the ongoing vitality of the trailblazing country hunk's recording career has proven the naysayers wrong. Cyrus' sixth album, Southern Rain, offers a winsome mix of upbeat rockers and wistful ballads, demonstrating that the artist's star quality is as strong as ever. Cyrus' sensitive side is showcased on the wistful title track, while the romantic "You Won't Be Lonely Now," "Everywhere I Wanna Be," and "I Will" make convincing cases for romantic devotion. "We the People" is a rousing anthem honoring the average working Joe, and the tongue-in-cheek "Burn Down the Trailer Park" and the sung-spoken power ballad "All I'm Thinking About Is You" show the artist's edgier, quirkier side. And the catchy bonus track "Hey Elvis" is a swaggering ode to the King of Rock 'n' Roll that sounds like a potential novelty hit of "Achy Breaky" proportions.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Hooking up with Dixie Chicks producer Blake Chancey and with producer Dann Huff, Billy Ray Cyrus made a label debut that showed off his country-rock abilities well. The single, "You Won't Be Lonely Now," which was rising in the country Top 40 and the pop charts at the time of the album's release, properly displayed the artist's sense of determination against adversity, cloaked in the terms of a love song. Similarly, the title song (co-written by Cyrus), which followed on the album, spoke of perseverance despite lean times. The rest of the record was more varied, including heartfelt ballads ("I Will," "Everywhere I Wanna Be") and up-tempo novelties ("Burn Down the Trailer Park," "Hey Elvis"), but the point had been made. Chancey and Huff helped Cyrus pick material that suited his country-rock style. "Southern Rain," for example, sounded like Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" as it might sound played by Lynyrd Skynyrd, while "Love You Back" recalled Little Feat's "Willin'." The result was a sturdy collection of average country songs effectively performed by a minor country talent. All of which was fine, unless you were hoping for an album that measured up to Cyrus' early sales figures, which, of course, Monument was.

This CD is one I have been longing to hear for sometime. Billy Ray is back with his rootsy style and down to Earth songs. His ''Burn Down the Trailer Park'' is comparable in it's ''wanna make ya dance'' beat to ''Achy Breaky.'' Great job BR!

I love the CD ''SOUTHERN RAIN'' by Billy Ray Cyrus very much. It is the Best MUSIC I have heard for a long time!!!! The selections of the songs are very tasteful, not shoddy! His vocals and presentations are exceptional! I always like music, where I can understand every word the artist sings!! This is true with this CD!! I can`t even bring myself to pick just one song to be my favorite, I LOVE THEM ALL! On the love ballads, his voice is soft with feelings and emotions. It gives me the chills!! The others, I call them fun songs, his voice is strong and powerful, you just want to get up and dance!!! I also like it,when the voice from the artist is clear to be heard and not drowned out by instruments. This is the case with this CD! CONGRATULATION Billy Ray Cyrus ''SOUTHERN RAIN'' is a EXCEPTIONAL CD!! Anybody who likes good music, should go out and get this CD!!

I really am enjoying this lastest album by Billy Ray Cyrus! The songs are a unique blend of hauntingly beautiful ballads, sung with power and passion, and rockin' upbeat FUN that makes it impossible for me to sit still! I find myself clapping and dancing and, of course, singing along! I have always LOVED Billy Ray's voice and this album proves that he gets better and better. He rocks BIGTIME on ''Burn Down the Trailer Park'', ''Crazy About You Baby'' and ''Hey Elvis''. My favorite ballad on the album is ''I Will''. Oh..what a tribute to unselfish love. Others, like ''Everywhere I Wanna Be'', ''Without You'', and ''You Won't Be Lonely Now'', are also sung with Billy Ray's own special depth and rippling soft-edged power!! Then, there's the beautiful ''Southern Rain'' that comes from the heart of the singer and reflects on his distant past. I would highly recommend this album to anyone, whether you are a country music fan or you like pop or soft southern rock..OR just plain GOOD music!

Since his debut in 1992, I have always been a fan of Billy Ray Cyrus. In November I was pleasantly surprised to receive the new CD titled ''Southern Rain'' in the mail. My husband purchased it online from Barnes & Noble for my birthday. Apparently at the same time, he signed me up to win an autographed copy of the same CD. Not knowing anything about the contest, I was Ecstatic to open the mailbox one day to find that I had indeed won the contest and the autographed CD was enclosed. Barnes & Noble... Thank you so much for ''promoting such a talented and well deserving star! Billy Ray continues to be #1 in my book! I highly recommend this CD to all of you who are looking for some good country music! #1 fan in Michigan

I loved every single song on this CD. ''Southern Rain'' is absolutely beautiful and ''I Will'' almost made me cry with it's great lyrics and Billy Ray's incredible voice. If you haven't listened to Billy Ray Cyrus in a few years, you may not recognize what you hear on this CD. Buy it, you WON'T be disappointed!

This is clearly the best Billy Ray Cyrus disc to date. The emotion he emits in not just the power ballads, but the rockers also shows the great voice he uses in each song. EVERYWHERE I WANNA BE, I WILL, and LOVE YOU BACK are truly radio hits. Fun songs like BURN DOWN THE TRAILE PARK and HEY ELVIS all stay true to the southern rocker sound. And, the title track SOUTHERN RAIN, written by Cyrus reminds one of a harder STRAWBERRY WINE. A great CD.....one meant to be listened to over and over.

This CD should give Billy Ray the awards and recognition this hard working man deserves. It is exceptional music from the passion and emotion to the rocker he can be. I especially love ''Southern Rain'', maybe because he wrote it. ''All I'm Thinking About Is You'' is a catchy tune. ''I Will'', ''Love You Back'' and ''Without You'' are full of love and feelings. Buy this CD now; you will not be sorry.
