Overview

Janis Ian is a two-hit wonder, with those two hits, "Society's Child" and "At Seventeen," separated by eight years. This compilation is intended for fans of "At Seventeen"; it does not contain any of her work from the "Society's Child" period. That means it draws from Ian's seven albums made for Columbia Records in the 1970s and early '80s, with one track from her relatively obscure Australian album Uncle Wonderful, plus "Fly Too High," the theme she wrote with disco producer Giorgio Moroder for the 1980 film Foxes. Of course, "At Seventeen" is included, along with some of her other favorites of the mid-'70s, such as her thoughtful look at the entertainment business, "Stars," and her emotive ballad "Jesse." Good choices are made from her albums, demonstrating that the overall quality of her songwriting was high and that she and producers such as Brooks Arthur came up with good jazz-pop arrangements. Licensed by Cooking Vinyl from Ian's Rude Girl label, the set would seem to represent her own selection of the best of this period.
