Overview

Blast off on an incredible journey into Space. No other book offers young readers so many paths to explore the universe. Kids can start out in their own cosmic neighborhood, zoom through outer space, and end in the far reaches of the universe. Or they can follow their own interests! They can read about real-life space heroes in "Inside Story," or get creative with "Hands On" activities and prove why the Earth spins. If they're especially interested in supernovas, nature's most powerful explosions, they can head straight to "Changing Stars" and move through the book from there.

Reader's Digest Pathfinders combine dynamic, multi-layered visuals with stimulating and accessible text plus easy-to-follow cross-references. The result enables readers to chart their own paths of discovery through a range of high-interest nonfiction subjects. Each path is completely unique, and readers can choose a new path every time they pick up the book.

Superb photographs and vibrant, varied color graphics enliven every page. The lively text, written to stimulate young imaginations, has been checked for accuracy by experts from such institutions as the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History. More than "museum tours in books," these kid-friendly guides offer a true hands-on approach to learning.

Examines the nature of outer space, our solar system, and our universe, including descriptions of the sun, moon, and planets, as well as constellations, nebulas and black holes.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
In this book there are many paths to learning and they are identified in a series of boxes on the pages. Kids can read about space heroes (inside story), undertake hands-on activities (create and make), learn with word builders, marvel at the information in that's amazing (an assemblage of facts and records), and follow the pathfinder (moving from one subject to another). Each spread has at least three of these boxes. In addition, the book is divided into three major sections--Exploring Space, Our Solar System--the sun's family which includes a focus on moon, asteroids meteoriods and comets, and Our Universe--constellations, nebulas, and black holes. There is plenty of humor and Dyer has created a great introductory book for spacehounds. For example, he tells readers that the origin of the name Jupiter is from Jove, ruler of the Roman gods, and most of the planet's moons are names after the god's many wives (a.k.a. lovers for the adults of the world). His inside story on the moon page offers a recap of those who have walked on the moon. In another section, kids will find one of the more interesting hands-on activities--advice and instructions for following the stars such as how to look at the night sky and how to use a planisphere (a round map of the night sky). The oversized pages, colorful illustrations and fact filled text will keep browsers busy for hours. There is a glossary and index. 1999, Reader's Digest, Ages 8 up, $16.99. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

'A great both informative and visual tour of the universe!'

This is a great book for anyone who wishes just to know more about space. With both new information and detailed insights, this book explains those common, but some-what hard to understand aspects of this intriguing part of science. It illustrates things(some in sequence) like how saturn acquired it rings, how martian meorites have ended up on earth, natural processes of stars and formation, the birth of the solar system, etc.also illustrated are the comparitive sizes of pluto, fascinating facts and much more.Trust me this is a book the young naturalist or scientist wouldn't want to miss.A great deep indroduction to the universe.
