Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sam Taylor and Simon Blake are on a treasure hunt in their spaceship. They are looking for rare space crystals and traveling in the asteroid belt, which circles the sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. With chunks of rock floating everywhere, it is a dangerous place to travel. Since asteroids do not have much gravity, landing is also difficult. Luckily Simon has done this safely hundreds of times. This time, however, Simon is not so lucky. The spaceship rockets do not fire properly and the ship crashes onto the asteroid surface. With the computers out of service and the radio not working, Sam and Simon both know how serious their situation is. It could be years before anyone else comes to this unexplored asteroid—they could not survive that long. Then Sam remembers seeing what he thought was another spaceship when they were preparing to land and thinks maybe the crew of the other ship is also looking for crystals and would not be too happy to see them. But that other ship is their only hope. Science fiction fans will enjoy this quick read. With its large font size, wide letter and line spacing, short chapters, and high interest level, this book is a good one for reluctant readers. Following the text are discussion questions and writing prompts for use in a classroom setting, as well as a glossary and suggested web sites for further information on some of the ideas in the book. 2006 (orig. 2005), Stone Arch Books, Ages 9 to 12.
