Children's Literature
October 4, 2004. Where were you on that day? Most people who saw the lunar landing in 1969 remember where they were. That launch and landing changed how humanity viewed the possibility of space travel. But what about what happened on October 4th, 2004? This was the day Burt Rutan, Brian Binnie and Mike Melvill made history and again changed the nature of space flight in a grand way. While the landing of Apollo on the moon showed us all space flight was a reality, the success of Rutan's work changed the idea of who might go to space and how. In this book, the author brings life and excitement to the success of the Spaceship One launch and landing in 2004. He provides a tremendous amount of detail for such a small and easy-to-read book. While many books like this provide photographs, this title in the "High Five Reading" series uses diagrams and illustrations to explain the complexities of this special flight. Throughout the book, words in bold—indicating difficulty—are defined not just in the back of the book, but rather at the bottom of the page where such definitions are more useful. This book is a valuable asset to any library. 2006, Red Brick Learning, Ages 9 to 12.
