Editorial Reviews

Indiebookspot.com - Chris Algeron
Spades is an admirable attempt to put a new spin on the old idea of a girl falling for a mysterious encounter. The novel sustains the mystery for most of its duration, creating a strong atmosphere. Chris's true nature remains very much hidden until the end of the book, and I would imagine few readers would be able to entirely guess the truth. Overall, Spades (Book One) feels like an interesting interesting introduction to what could become a fascinating and very original series of book

This was fairly a new concept, for me at least, and I enjoyed every part of the book. The writing style was easy and the action fast placed. The romantic part of the story flowed normally; I always appreciate when there isn’t instant love in a book and it is clear from the start that there might be just physical attraction.
Calise Thomas, the main character, is that kind of teenage girl that gets thru enough. She gets to experience grief, despair and depression and with the help of Chris she slowly learns how to let all those feelings behind.
I liked the idea of the secret group in the woods and the whole training part, and I felt like going mad until the true purpose of that group was revealed just at the end of the story. Still “Spades” had a cliffhanger that makes you need to read the second book as soon as possible.
I would love to tell you more, but I am afraid not to give any spoilers. I will tell you just this: if you need a mystery book combined with a little romance and action, you will absolutely love this.

    120 pages

A quick read at 120 pages. This book started out bad, with a grown man following a 17 year old girl into the women's bathroom of an opera house. There he saves her life because she has slashed her wrists. Not only should he not have gone into the ladies' restroom, Celiste sure must have been quick with the cutting, as Chis followed her in, then found her bleeding to death, in a locked stall, he dragged her out and took her to his mansion. No one stopped them, called for help and she did not have medical care. Where were her parents? There was no mention of anyone looking for her. Does anyone else see the problems with this scenerio? It would not have happened, readers! This book was well edited. There are some adult themes, it is totally unbelievable. I did not like most of the characters. Hey, I can a Spade a spade as I see it.It has a cliff hanger conclusion and is the first installment of three ( so far). This one is free, the rest have a fee. If readers can get past how unrealistic this book is, it is okay. For ages 16 and up. Not my game of cards. I think I broke even with this one.

Spades (Book One) is a solid, well written story. I found it to be completely intense. The characters are thoroughly developed and are very realistic. The details and the setting are so descriptive that I felt like I was actually in the scenes myself. I always read books before I let my daughter read them, and this book is totally suitable for a young adult. The main character, Calise, is a strong, young woman, who pulls the reader into the story. In reference to the other reviews that complained that the story didn't have an ending, the fact that it is titled "Book One" should have made them realize the story continued past this book. The plot twists kept me turning the pages and I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. THUMBS UP!!

SPADES is better than I expected. Then again, I'm not easy to please. When it comes to books, I'm very picky. This series piqued my interest. I'm on my way to get the rest of Ms. Evans' books. Keep up the good work

This story was a pleasant surprise. I immensely enjoyed the way Calise's story flowed together, and it really felt like I was in the woods with her, getting trained. The chemistry between her and Chris is incredible! I can't wait to see what happens. Tre is probably my favorite character. He just seems like a fun guy to hang out with.

Spades is a thrill ride, that's for sure. I'm usually into cozy mysteries, but this had enough romantic suspense to keep me occupied. I'm definitely going to read the rest of the books.
