Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
All of the titles in the "Costume Around the World" series are arranged the same way. Each discusses the effect of climate, geography, and local traditions on the costumes of citizens today. Other chapters cover resources, religious influences, special occasions, uniforms, and the country's influence in the world. The illustrations are photographs and many of them appear to be taken at special events. The only discussion of everyday wear is focused on sports. There is a chapter dedicated to fashion for boys with a rather unfortunate photograph of young teenagers passing cigarettes around. While the text describes contemporary customs, the photographs are often of special occasion costumes and do not really add to the reader's understanding. This book makes a number of generalizations and should not be used as the sole source for information about apparel anywhere around the world. The book contains a glossary, a bibliography including websites, and an index. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
