About the Author

Russell Alexander Alger (1836–1907) began his political career as the twentieth governor of Michigan; he was later appointed Secretary of War in 1897 during President William McKinley’s administration, which declared war on Spain in 1898. After his tenure as Secretary of War, Alger was appointed United States senator for Michigan.
