This is a compact, pocketbook size volume, hence easy to carry. Thus, for for those requiring an in-hand aid, such as a tourists in a Hispanic country, who have scant knowledge of the vocabulary, it is of practical size. Unfortunately, some of its general features as not so helpful: the size of the type is quite small, and the color red is used instead of black for the Spanish words: both of these features make the entries in Spanish more difficult to read. In general, vocabulary and grammar are separated in this book, wwhich limits the section on basic grammar to just eight pages. To be more useful, the book should integrate some of the features of grammar within the lists of words, since the user needs to know certain grammatical features of words in order to make use of them in sentences. It would be helpful, for example, to indicate the prepositions commonly used with given verbs in particular cases. When I purchased Barron´s Spanish Vocabulary, I was already familiar with the publisher´s self-study materials 'Barron´s Educational Series' for several languages and in other areas. I would particularly recommend the foreign language guides 501 Spanish Verbs, 501 Portuguese Verbs and 501 Russian Verbs.
