One piece of that land is turning to mud, and the devil himself is rumored to live in that murky mess, for on dark nights sparks fly high. How to put an end to the devil's mischief? Why, a dance contest with the fiery fiend himself. The colonel bristles with confidence, but the devil is equally sure of himself, until, recognizing his own false pride in the devil's boasts, the colonel discovers the perfect way to outsmart him.

Witty, expressive illustrations aglow with color bring to life a Colonial American tale that sizzles and snaps with humor and folk wisdom.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cheri Stowers
Colonel Lightfoot considers himself the best dancer around. He struts and prances over the countryside, gloating about his fine dancing skills. Another cause for pride is his fine Virginia land. It stretches green and lush along the James River. But one patch of land is a soggy, boggy mess. Folks say it's the devil's stomping ground. They've seen sparks fly through the darkness. Colonel Lightfoot, determined to reclaim his land, challenges the devil to a dancing contest. The devil agrees and soon they are stomping and twirling, striving to outdo each other. Hours pass and the devil is sure it is only a matter of time before the colonel will give up. But the colonel gets a brilliant idea. "If I can trip up the devil on account of his pride," muses the colonel, "perhaps I'll come out the winner yet!" Based on a Virginia legend, this tale is filled with action and suspense. Dramatic acrylic and pastel illustrations capture the passion and mystery of this tale. A great read aloud. A fun resource for a study about colonial Virginia, and useful for generating discussions about legends. The book's addendum gives interesting historical facts and explains how the author wove the story together.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-5-A story set in Colonial Virginia and based on local legend. Colonel Lightfoot was an amazing dancer, and always the first to say so. His self-satisfaction and flashy moves caught the attention of the devil. Hating to be outdone, the fiend began dancing at night on the colonel's land, turning it into a swampy mess. Enraged and overly confident, Lightfoot challenged him to a dancing duel. Gore combined acrylics and pastels to create vibrant, textured illustrations. Lightfoot always appears to be thinner and sprightlier than the other characters, who are well dressed and proper. His elongated grace is echoed by his foe's lithe shape. A finely curled mustache and goatee add a bit of humor to the devil's countenance and prevent him from looking too evil. Likewise, winged angels and petulant, toddlerlike demons provide musical accompaniment and comic relief during the contest. In the end, Lightfoot bested his adversary, who slunk down "to the fires below." Concluding the story with a few shivers, Quattlebaum reveals that on dark nights, people still see sparks flying on Dancing Point, where the competition continues. An author's note cites sources and informs readers that Dancing Point is a real place located along the James River. Told with tongue-tingling language, this story will make a great read-aloud.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Tales of outsmarting the Devil are common; what sets this one apart is that it's rooted in a real place and is sparked by acrylic and pastel illustrations. Colonel Lightfoot is born with quicksilver feet and his dancing dexterity grows along with him. His other love is his Virginia land that stretches green along the James River, except for one strange, marshy point where rumors claim the Devil dances. One evening, as Colonel Lightfoot sets out for a ball, the Devil's sparks ruin his fine dancing clothes, and he vows to rid his land of the brazen demon. When the Devil challenges him to dance for it, the colonel is confident he will win-until hours go by. Exhausted, the colonel taunts the Devil to leap higher and spin faster, finally tricking him into oblivion. American folk art inspires Gore's depiction of colonial times with feathery backgrounds, pointy-chin-and-nosed people and gossamer overlays on fabric. Clad in a vest with lacey fichu and purple pants, the cloven-footed, leering Devil with pointy beard, curled mustache and donkey ears, exudes heat. Bursting with sizzle, this version is devilishly crafty. (author's note) (Folktale. 6-9)
