Overview

You might expect a book about a dog who gets cancer to be a depressing experience. For "Sparky Fights Back," nothing could be further from the truth. Here is a true tale, well-told with great honesty and humor that readers have found "inspiring," triumphant," and "riveting." This story will reward all animal lovers, for it’s about how a dog taught his owners courage and persistence in the face of a great challenge. Through Sparky, they found that hope can open doors - doors where miracles can pass through.

Along the way, the reader will pick up much practical knowledge about fighting cancer. Indeed, the authors’ "shock and awe" approach is a model for battling this disease in humans as well as animals.

After finishing the uplifting story, caretakers of cancer dogs will find direct advice in a special section, "If Your Dog Gets Cancer." And there is and appendix full of important information and resources. The book’s foreword is by Samantha M. Schmidt, Director of the Animal Cancer Foundation.

Editorial Reviews

American Kennel Club Gazette
All of us dread the day we discover a lump on our beloved pet. Our worst fear is to hear the diagnosis of cancer. Josée Clerens and John Clifton have published Sparky Fights Back, documenting the life of their Australian Terrier and his journey through treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

John and Josée had decided to get an Aussie - their first dog - after reading an illustrated dog book. After much searching, they found a puppy for sale - their Sparky. They had met the challenges of raising a puppy in a New York City apartment building and now, six years later, were faced with trying to save the life of their beloved dog. How unpredictable life is!

In addition to being a wonderful, heartwarming story, the book includes an expanded glossary of tools available to fight cancer, an appendix with the 10 warning signs of cancer, and listings (with addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses) of resources such as radiology facilities by state, online resources, oncologist locators, sources for financial aid, and veterinary associations.

Dog Fancy
Four years after their Australian Terrier went into remission from lymphoma, Clerens and Clifton recount the difficult and expensive road they traveled to save him. Determined to "shock and awe" the cancer into remission with a multi-pronged, shotgun approach to treatment, the couple recorded the ups and downs of Sparky's journey from diagnosis back to health. Pet owners prepared to go the extra mile upon getting the bad news will appreciate this honest tale with a happy ending. An appendix full of resources, including a short list of veterinary financial aid institutions, is updated regularly on the authors' Web site.

A Success Story -- Share with others!

'Sparky Fights Back' is the perfect book for dog lovers of all ages: I received this book for Christmas and now have given copies to my lady friends in their nineties and to my teenage great-grandchildren -- all have loved the book! What might surely have been a tragic story of illness and loss is instead a story of courage, the triumph of medicine and a story of unyielding determination to save the life of a little dog afflicted with cancer. It is so refreshing to read a 'love-story' of courage and optimism that yielded such a profoundly positive outcome. Book is enjoyable to read and every page is interesting and made me want to read every word. I also appreciated the authors' sharing of resources in the hope that the lives of more indispensible dogs might be saved. Most of all, the book is a human interest lesson that everyone can appreciate, lending truth to the saying, 'Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.'

Sparky Fights Back is a Winner

This poignant tale of a spunky Australian terrier's heroic battle with cancer is both touching and riveting. And, it is a 'page turner' in the best sense of the phrase. The authors guide us through the struggle, joy, frustration and ultimate success of Sparky's life, disease and cure. We come away with not only a large 'Hurrah!' for Sparky, a lovable, yet individually willful canine with not a little quirkiness - but with a profound regard for his courageous master and mistress in their unwavering determination to explore every avenue that might provide a cure for their beloved pet. While the owners' devotion to Sparky is palpable, the well-structured writing style is informative and happily peppered with anecdotal humor. The dynamic between pet, master, and veterinarian is cleverly woven throughout. Dog lovers will laugh and cry as the tale of Sparky's cure unfolds. But, to Clerens' and Clifton's credit, the book never languishes into raw sentimentality. The meld of the scientific and emotional aspects of getting Sparky on the road to recovery are presented in an intelligent and supremely readable style. At the book's conclusion, the reader with have bonded with both dog and masters. Sparky Fights Back is a compelling rendering of the joys and sorrows that come from loving a dog. Here is a hearty recommendation for a book in which all dog lovers will take pleasure, and for those whose pets who face a similar crisis as Sparky's, will savor.
