School Library Journal
Gr 6-8-- As in Rescue Josh McGuire (Hyperion, 1991), Mikaelsen aptly describes a 13-year-old boy's emotional response to an appalling event. Ricky Diaz, the son of an ex-Drug Enforcement Agency pilot, vows to avenge the death of his mother, an innocent victim of the international drug war. When he overhears his father refuse a secret mission to confiscate the Skyhawk, a Mexican drug cartel's plane (equipped with radar stolen from the DEA), Ricky decides to do it himself. Spanish-speaking and confident in his ability to fly small aircraft, he heads for the border. Once across, he lives among the rateros (homeless children) and meets Soledad, a streetwise waif who shares not only survival tips, but also strategies for penetrating the high-security cartel compound. Ultimately Ricky accomplishes his goal, but not without the last minute intervention of his father. Although the plot is far-fetched, many aspects of the novel ring true. The characterization is strong, the depiction of street life realistic, and the theme timely. This fast-paced tale should appeal to a varied audience, including reluctant readers. --Pat Katka, San Diego Public Library

Sparrow Hawk Red By: Ben Mikaelson Main Characters: Ricky: Ricky is a kind kid. He can be sneaky though. He's one who will never forget to get revenge on someone. Benito: Benito is a calm retired DEA agent. He can get really worried or get really mad when something goes wrong. Inside he has a soft soul. Soledad: Soledad is a little Mexican girl. She loves to cause trouble and then run. But she is homeless. Drug Smugglers: The Drug Smugglers are nasty and MEAN! They have children get there food. They love to steal radar systems from the DEA. Plot: Ricky wants to get back at his mom's death. He skips school and goes to Mexico. He went to steal a plane from the drug smugglers. This plane has a special radar in it. When he gets there they literally almost kill him! They send him to get food and when he came back he got his chance. Ricky gets in the plane and starts to take off and just then they start to shoot at him. The planes makes it in to the air with no trouble. They later follow him to the border and his dad joins and starts a dogfight to distract them. The DEA agents help him over the border safely. Setting: This book takes place in the present day and is in Mexico and at Camacho Ranch. Theme: This book was based on stealing an airplane with a radar system in it. I liked the book because it had constant cliff hangers and they keep me going because you never know what is about to happen next. I connected to the book because when my great grandparents died I would do anything to get them back. I think anybody would feel that way to because it's sad when somebody dies.

I think this book was awesome!!! Some parts of the book were sad. Ricky was challenging himself the whole time and not knowing it 'till later. This book has many adventures. Ricky took alot of risks, he always had to ask his mom if he should do something. She will always support him. Just read it, and believe me you will love it.
