Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Color pictures of comical sparrows are the animals used to illustrate examples of addition and subtraction concepts. Addition is in the first portion of the book; the sparrows join other sparrows. The text on addition includes the number words that count up to final sum of the birds in the group. For the addition equation of 5 + 3 = 8, the text counts three more sparrows after five (six, seven, eight) to get to the sum of eight. The highest sum in the book is twenty. The bottom of the page highlights the numerals involved with the equation. The other half of the book focuses on subtraction. The text supports the subtraction process by counting down. The highlighted numerals at the bottom of the layout provide support with the subtraction or count down. The illustrations for subtraction show sparrows leaving the group. This book is a part of the "Count the Critter" series to introduce mathematical concepts. The publisher web site provides links to activities to support addition and subtraction work. Adults working with students will want to include manipulatives to support the concepts during instruction.
